Bybit vs KuCoin: the real cost compared

Choosing between Bybit and KuCoin is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. This page puts a number on that.

In our comparison, Bybit falls into the crypto exchange category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while KuCoin sits in crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says a fair bit about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and who should pick which. Rates on this page are live, so today’s result is not set in stone.

How the numbers are worked out

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Also look beyond the conversion: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

Like for like: Bybit and KuCoin

Bybit and KuCoin belong to the same category, crypto exchange, so they compete for the same customers. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.

Check the basics: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. On paper, Bybit supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies and KuCoin supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.

Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

How fast the money arrives

The fastest delivery we have on record for Bybit is Instant; for KuCoin it is Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

Using both, or switching

You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

If you switch, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and keep a copy of your transaction history.

Our verdict: KuCoin is cheaper more often

For 4 out of 4 scenarios we can test on both sides, KuCoin came out cheaper after fees and rate margin. On price alone, that makes KuCoin the default pick.

This does not rule out Bybit. Scroll back to the table to find where Bybit comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, Bybit is simply the cheaper option for you.

There is more to it than price. Bybit may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

Safety checks before you sign up

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

Which one suits you?

For travel spending, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.

Bybit vs KuCoin as crypto exchanges

Comparing Bybit and KuCoin as exchanges means looking at more than one fee. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. If you use the order book, maker and taker fees replace the spread as the main cost.

Then there are deposit and withdrawal costs. How you fund your account, by bank transfer, card or another method, changes the cost. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.

And then there is the question of who holds your coins. Leaving assets on a platform means trusting it to keep them safe. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.

Does the amount matter?

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
