Bybit versus Kraken

Picking Bybit or Kraken is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup are added up. That is the gap we measure here.

In our comparison, Bybit falls into the crypto exchange group and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Kraken belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table you can read how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and who should pick which. Since we work with live rates, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

How we compare Bybit and Kraken

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The numbers decide, not the commission.

Using both, or switching

You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

For anything above everyday amounts, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and download your statements for your records.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

The right choice depends on what you do

For travel spending, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

For buying digital assets, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. Nothing here is investment advice.

Is your money safe?

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

Two rivals in the same category

Bybit and Kraken are both in our crypto exchange category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. Bybit handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; Kraken handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, together with practical things like limits and support. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. Before a big transfer with Bybit or Kraken, read the current pricing on their site.

What to compare between two exchanges

Comparing Bybit and Kraken as exchanges means looking at more than one fee. First the spread: the difference between buy and sell price on a simple purchase. Advanced trading usually works with maker and taker fees, and a limit order that waits in the book often costs less than buying at market.

Deposits and withdrawals deserve a separate look. Bank transfers are often a cheap way in, while card deposits usually cost more. Withdrawal fees on coins vary a lot, so check the asset you plan to move.

Finally, think about custody. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. Many users move larger holdings to a wallet they control, which makes the withdrawal fee part of the real cost.

Delivery time and ease of use

Bybit lists its quickest option as Instant, while Kraken lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Which one is cheaper?: Bybit wins on cost

Across 4 of the 4 comparisons that both providers offer, Bybit left you with more money after fees and rate margin. On price alone, that makes Bybit the default pick.

This does not rule out Kraken. The scenario table above shows where Kraken comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.

There is more to it than price. Kraken may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
