Kraken versus OKX
Choosing between Kraken and OKX is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. This page puts a number on that.
On our site, Kraken falls into the crypto exchange category and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while OKX belongs to crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.
Further down this page you can read how we work out the cost, what each one is good at and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.
Speed and convenience
Kraken lists its quickest option as Instant, while OKX lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Does the amount matter?
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. With Kraken or OKX, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.
Regulation and safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
With crypto platforms, look a little further: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
Our verdict: OKX wins on cost
In 4 of 4 comparisons we can test on both sides, OKX left you with more money at live rates. On price alone, that makes OKX the default pick.
That does not make Kraken the wrong choice. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where Kraken does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
There is more to it than price. You may already have a verified account with Kraken, which saves a sign-up. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Comparing two crypto exchanges
Crypto exchanges price their service in several layers. There is the spread, the gap between the buy and sell price, which you pay on instant purchases. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.
Moving money in and out also costs something. A bank transfer is usually the cheapest way to fund an account; a card is faster but pricier. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.
Finally, think about custody. Coins on an exchange are held by that exchange, not by you. If you plan to move coins to your own wallet, include the withdrawal fee in your comparison.
How the numbers are worked out
There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
GoldexPay is independent. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Which one suits you?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
When buying crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
Using both, or switching
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It is a quick check that pays off.
If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Two rivals in the same category
Kraken and OKX belong to the same category, crypto exchange, so this is a like-for-like comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.
Start with coverage: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Kraken covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, OKX covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
