The MXN/USD exchange rate: rate, costs and context

This overview tracks the price relationship between Mexican Peso (MXN) and US Dollar (USD), together with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. As of October 30, 2026, 1 MXN equals 0.052896 USD, and 1 USD equals 18.9050 MXN.

The figure at the top is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between what wholesale traders pay for MXN and what they ask for it. Treat it as the cleanest reference you can get: nobody earns anything on it directly, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.

The amount that lands in the other account comes down to two separate costs: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Further down we explain how those costs work, look at what a conversion costs in practice and share simple habits to lose less on the exchange when converting MXN to USD.

Tips for converting MXN to USD

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little when the margin is high. The number that matters is how much USD arrives for your MXN, and that already includes both margin and fee.

At foreign tills and cash machines, you may be asked whether to pay in MXN or in the local currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.

Timing can also matter. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. For transfers that can wait, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

The payment method matters as well. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers means fixed charges hit you fewer times.

Choosing a route to send USD

With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment through SWIFT. Your transfer may hop between several banks before it arrives, each of which can deduct a charge. It typically arrives within a few working days, and the exact cost is not always clear in advance.

Dedicated providers take another route. They hold balances in both currencies, so your MXN stays in the MXN system and the recipient is paid in USD from a local account. That is often faster and cheaper, and you see exactly what will arrive before you confirm.

Speed is not down to the provider alone: your payment method, cut-off times and public holidays on either side. A first transfer can take longer as the provider completes its checks. Finish verification in advance if timing is tight.

Where Mexican Peso and US Dollar are used

Mexican Peso is the money you pay with in Mexico. US Dollar is what people pay with in United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama. This matters when you plan a trip, pay an invoice or send money to family.

There are plenty of everyday reasons to convert MXN to USD: rent or a mortgage abroad, tuition fees, a salary paid in another currency, savings or a holiday. Each situation asks for something different: a single big transfer benefits most from a sharp rate, while regular small amounts suffer more from flat charges.

Each country has its own payment habits. Account formats differ: IBAN in one place, account and routing numbers in another, and in some places mobile wallets or cash collection are widely used. Check which details the provider needs before you start.

Example: converting 20,000.00 MXN

Consider a transfer of 20,000.00 MXN. Converted at the pure mid-market rate (0.052896), that marks the theoretical maximum of what the recipient could get. In reality every provider keeps something, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.

Across the 9 providers in our comparison, Wise gave the best result, with 1,052.71 USD in the end. Whatever is missing compared with the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.

Bear in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. Fixed fees weigh heavily on small sums, whereas the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Enter your own amount in the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.

Sending a larger amount from MXN to USD

Check the provider’s licence first. In the UK that means authorisation by the FCA, elsewhere a central bank or financial supervisor. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own and that offers protection if the company fails.

Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details. Verify through a channel you trust.

Big sums usually trigger extra verification. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.

Mid-market rate versus the rate you get

Most providers will not give you the mid-market rate as such. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. This is known as the exchange rate margin. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 MXN on every 100 MXN, without it ever appearing as a fee.

Besides the hidden margin, a lot of services charge an explicit fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. On classic bank transfers abroad other banks along the route may take their own cut, so the recipient gets less than you expected.

Be wary of offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". The cost often sits in the rate instead. The only fair way to compare is how much USD the recipient ends up with for an identical MXN amount, and that is the figure our table ranks on.

About this comparison

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, to calculate what actually arrives in USD. In total 9 providers are included, so you can see the differences at a glance.

We update the rates every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. The final price is always set by the provider itself, since markets keep moving, especially when markets are busy.

We are not owned by any provider. Some of the links are affiliate links. They have no influence on the order: providers are sorted purely by how much USD the recipient gets.

One year of MXN to USD

Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate has changed by -1.65%. Within those twelve months the rate peaked at 0.059191 USD for one MXN, while the bottom of the range was 0.052896. Today’s rate of 0.052896 sits somewhere inside that range.

The distance between the high and the low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. For a bigger amount, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, sometimes more than the choice of provider.

Exchange rates respond to central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.
