The PLN/RON exchange rate explained

This overview brings together the price relationship between Polish Zloty (PLN) and Romanian Leu (RON) and compares it with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. At the latest update on October 30, 2026, one PLN is worth 1.2131 RON, while 1 RON equals 0.824312 PLN.

The rate shown above is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between what wholesale traders pay for PLN and what they ask for it. It works as a fair reference point: no fee or margin is built in, and that is why few consumer services pass it on unchanged.

What ends up on the RON side comes down to two separate costs: the gap between the provider’s rate and the mid-market rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Below the converter and chart we take those costs apart, show how they add up on a real amount and share simple habits to keep more of your money when you swap Polish Zloty for Romanian Leu.

The countries behind PLN and RON

Polish Zloty is the currency of Poland. Romanian Leu is what people pay with in Romania. That is useful to know if you travel, shop online abroad or support someone in another country.

The reasons for changing PLN into RON vary: rent or a mortgage abroad, tuition fees, a salary paid in another currency, savings or a holiday. What suits one case may not suit another: a single big transfer benefits most from a sharp rate, whereas frequent smaller payments suffer more from flat charges.

Each country has its own payment habits. Depending on the country, you need an IBAN, a local account number or a mobile wallet, and in some places cash pickup or mobile money is common. Check which details the provider needs before you start.

Example: converting 5,000.00 PLN

Let’s use a conversion of 5,000.00 PLN. Using the reference rate of 1.2131, that sum sets the ceiling for what is possible on the RON side. In reality every provider keeps something, as costs are deducted somewhere in the process.

Of the 9 providers we compared, Wise delivered the most: the recipient gets 6,036.21 RON in the end. The difference between that figure and the mid-market amount is what the conversion actually cost you.

Keep in mind that the cheapest provider for 5,000.00 PLN is not automatically the cheapest for every amount. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while a percentage margin grows along with the amount. Run your own figure through the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.

Getting the most RON for your PLN

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A low headline fee proves nothing because the margin can make up the difference. The number that matters is how much RON arrives for your PLN, and that already includes both margin and fee.

If you pay or withdraw cash in a RON country, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. It usually comes with a steep markup. Pick the local currency and let your own card provider do the conversion.

Timing can also matter. At weekends, with the wholesale market shut, some services add an extra buffer to the rate. When there is no deadline, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It takes the guesswork out, but the target may never be reached.

The payment method matters as well. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Sending less often but in larger amounts means fixed charges hit you fewer times.

Recent movement in the PLN/RON rate

Over the past twelve months, the exchange rate shows a change of +1.24%. In that period the top of the range was 1.2444 RON per PLN, while the low point came in at 1.1874. The current 1.2131 can be measured against those two levels.

That range between high and low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, the moment you choose can make a noticeable difference to what arrives, occasionally more than the difference between providers.

Rates are pushed around by central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If you want to act on a certain rate, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.

About this comparison

Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 1.2131. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, which gives the amount the recipient receives. We do this for 9 providers, ranked from most to least received.

Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 30, 2026. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, because their rate can move between our updates, especially when markets are busy.

GoldexPay is independent. Some links on this page are affiliate links, which help fund our work. They have no influence on the order: providers are sorted purely by how much RON the recipient gets.

What banks and apps really charge for PLN to RON

Nearly every bank and app do not convert at the mid-market rate as such. They quote a slightly worse rate and keep the difference. That gap is called the exchange rate margin. A markup of 2%, for example, means that about 2 out of every 100 PLN never reach the recipient.

On top of the margin, most banks add a visible fee. This is usually a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or both at once. For transfers sent through the banking network other banks along the route may take their own cut, so the recipient gets less than you expected.

Be wary of services that advertise free transfers. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The only fair way to compare is the total amount that arrives in RON for exactly the same sum, which is how the table above is sorted.

SWIFT versus local payout for PLN to RON

With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment via the SWIFT system. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, and each can take a fee. Expect anything from one to a few working days, and the final deduction is often only visible afterwards.

Many money transfer apps use a different model. They keep money in accounts in both regions, which means your payment and the payout both happen domestically. The result tends to be quicker and less expensive, and the amount that arrives is known in advance.

Delivery time depends on several factors: your payment method, cut-off times and public holidays on either side. The very first payment may be slower as the provider completes its checks. Get verified before you need to send if the money has to arrive on a set date.

Larger transfers: what to check first

Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own.

Check names and account details twice. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details. Call to confirm, using contact details you already had.

Larger transfers often come with additional questions. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some providers lower their margin on request for larger customers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
