Platinum to Gold: what you are looking at

The page you are reading brings together the exchange rate between Platinum (XPT) and Gold (XAU) and sets it next to the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. At the latest update on October 31, 2026, 1 XPT equals 0.370637 XAU, while 1 XAU is worth 2.6981 XPT.

The figure at the top is the interbank mid rate. It is calculated as the middle of what wholesale traders pay for XPT and what they ask for it. Think of it as a neutral benchmark: it contains no profit margin and no fees, and that is why consumers almost never receive it in full.

What ends up on the XAU side depends on two things: a markup hidden in the exchange rate and the visible transfer or service fee. Further down we explain how those costs work, show how they add up on a real amount and list practical steps to lose less on the exchange when converting XPT to XAU.

Platinum against Gold: the last twelve months

Over the past twelve months, the exchange rate has changed by -10.24%. Within those twelve months the rate peaked at 0.465993 XAU per XPT, while the low point came in at 0.368407. At 0.370637, the rate today is easy to place within that band.

The distance between the high and the low is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. For a bigger amount, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, even when the fee stays the same.

Exchange rates respond to news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you are waiting for a particular level, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.

Before you send: security and large amounts

Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds, which protects you if something goes wrong.

Verify every detail of the recipient. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Be suspicious if someone urges you to pay quickly or suddenly changes bank details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.

For large amounts, expect extra checks. You may need to show proof of the source of funds, for example a contract of sale or an account statement. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

Reading a gold or silver price

Gold and silver prices are expressed per troy ounce, slightly heavier than a regular ounce, at around 31.1 grams. In currency notation, gold is XAU, silver XAG, platinum XPT and palladium XPD, and they are treated like a currency in this pair. One unit in this pair means one troy ounce.

What you see is the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, to pay for production, distribution and the seller’s margin. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.

You can own precious metals in several forms. Physical metal at home needs safe storage and insurance. Professional storage costs a yearly fee, with the metal registered to you. Exchange-traded products give exposure to the price, not always to the metal itself.

Tax rules also differ. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. We show prices, not investment advice.

What banks and apps really charge for XPT to XAU

Nearly every bank and app stay away from the mid-market rate as such. They offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. People call this the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that about 2 out of every 100 XPT never reach the recipient.

Besides the hidden margin, many providers add a visible fee. That can be a fixed amount per transfer, a percentage of the amount or both at once. With international bank payments other banks along the route may take their own cut, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.

Be wary of offers that say "no fees" or "0% commission". The cost often sits in the rate instead. What really counts is how much XAU the recipient ends up with for exactly the same sum, which is how the table above is sorted.

How our XPT/XAU comparison works

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, and work out how much XAU the recipient would end up with. We do this for 0 providers, ranked from most to least received.

Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. The final price is always set by the provider itself, and it can differ slightly from our calculation.

No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. We may earn a commission through some links. They have no influence on the order: providers are sorted purely by how much XAU the recipient gets.

Tips for converting XPT to XAU

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little if the rate is poor. The number that matters is how much XAU arrives for your XPT, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.

At foreign tills and cash machines, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. That option is known as dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.

Timing plays a role too. At weekends, with the wholesale market shut, some services add an extra buffer to the rate. When there is no deadline, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, though there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

Finally, look at how you pay. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, while a regular bank transfer to the provider is usually the cheapest way in. Bundling smaller transfers also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
