We wrote this page to help people who pays into an account at Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. and wants to get the details right. Remember that the BIC only identifies the bank, not the account: the account number or IBAN does that part.

The Turkish Lira and what conversion costs you

Accounts at Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. are usually held in TRY, the local currency. Money sent in a different currency is exchanged into TRY on its way to Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. – and the bank that does it picks the rate. You rarely see a separate line for that conversion.

Who converts the payment matters, because each party uses its own rate. Compare what TRY the recipient gets via different providers.

Exchange rates move during the day. For regular payments, a slightly better rate make a real difference over a year.

Why Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. has an 8- and an 11-character code

A SWIFT code is built from a few fixed parts: the first four letters identify the bank, characters five and six show the country and the two after that mark the location. In this case, the 8-character core is TEBUTRIS.

XXX at the end of TEBUTRISXXX is not a missing value or an error: it indicates the head office of Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s.. Certain payment forms insist on 11 characters, in which case you can enter XXX behind TEBUTRIS.

As a rule the code is typed in capitals, without spaces or dashes. Copying the code is safer than retyping it, because one wrong letter changes the bank.

When will the money arrive at Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s.?

An international transfer usually needs anywhere from one to several business days, depending on the currency, the route and the banks involved. Transfers sent after the cut-off time or just before weekends and holidays often start the next business day. Compliance checks by one of the banks can also cause some delay, even when all details are correct.

When a payment takes longer than expected, ask your bank for the status; with that reference banks can see where the payment is. Money transfer services often provide tracking in their app showing where the money has got.

If the money does not arrive within the expected time, the sender needs to contact the bank that sent it. On the receiving end, you can check your statements to see a partial amount because fees can reduce the amount.

International transfers from Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s.: the real cost

What you pay for a payment abroad has more than one component, and the transfer fee is only the most visible one. On top of the transfer fee, correspondent or intermediary banks can take a cut, and if currencies are converted, the bank often applies a rate that is less favourable than the real market rate.

The markup on the rate tends to be the biggest cost. A simple test: put the rate you get against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

Specialist money transfer services often use rates closer to the mid-market rate. GoldexPay lists these services next to each other, showing the amount the recipient gets. You can always use your account at Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. as the source of the money; only the conversion and sending happen elsewhere.

Incoming international payments to Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s.

Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details from you, and missing ones are a common cause of delays. In practice that means: your full name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the BIC TEBUTRISXXX and, often, your address.

Some sending banks want the name and address of Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s.; it does no harm to include it. Check each detail before you send them.

An incoming payment will not always land in full. Correspondent banks can take a fee, Turk Ekonomi Bankasi A.s. may charge for incoming payments, and if the currency changes, a markup on the rate comes on top. On invoices, it is common to agree how the fees are split to avoid a shortfall.

Scams that use SWIFT codes

Fraudsters regularly use fake invoices containing new bank details, sometimes in an email that looks completely genuine. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether the request is genuine – scammers simply use real codes.

Always confirm changed bank details through a phone call. Urgency and requests to keep it quiet tend to be warning signs – a real supplier can wait a day. If money was sent to a fraudster, contact your bank immediately.

Recipients are targeted too: one known trick is a buyer who pays too much and then sends a request to refund the difference abroad. Do not act before the money has really arrived.

How to check TEBUTRIS before you pay

The safest source for a SWIFT code is the recipient’s own bank details – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. Compare that code against TEBUTRIS here and ask if anything does not match.

With a wrong code, the transfer may get stuck, bounce back or cost extra. A mistake in the IBAN or account number is more serious, because the money may be credited to someone else.

Many banking apps check the structure of an IBAN, but that does not prove the account belongs to the right person. Some banks now compare the payee name with the account. Sending a small amount first can be worth it for large sums, even if it costs an extra fee.
