Bitfinex vs BLOX

Deciding between Bitfinex and BLOX is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

In our comparison, Bitfinex belongs to the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while BLOX belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you something about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator we walk through our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and who should pick which. Because the rates are live, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Our method

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

The short answer: Bitfinex is cheaper more often

For 3 out of 3 comparisons we can test on both sides, Bitfinex left you with more money at live rates. On price alone, that makes Bitfinex the default pick.

That does not make BLOX the wrong choice. Check the table above to see which conversions BLOX still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward BLOX. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

Switching between Bitfinex and BLOX

Using two providers side by side is common. It is perfectly normal to keep Bitfinex for one task and BLOX for another. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

For anything above everyday amounts, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

Does the amount matter?

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Delivery time and ease of use

Bitfinex lists its quickest option as Instant, while BLOX lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

Speed often depends on how you pay. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

Who should pick Bitfinex and who BLOX?

For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Is your money safe?

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

Comparing two crypto exchanges

With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. On the trading screen, maker and taker fees apply instead: makers add orders to the order book, takers fill existing ones.

Then there are deposit and withdrawal costs. How you fund your account, by bank transfer, card or another method, changes the cost. Withdrawal fees on coins vary a lot, so check the asset you plan to move.

Finally, think about custody. As long as your crypto sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys. If you plan to move coins to your own wallet, include the withdrawal fee in your comparison.

Two rivals in the same category

Both Bitfinex and BLOX sit in the crypto exchange category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.

Check the basics: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. Bitfinex handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies; BLOX handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
