Bitpanda versus Bitstamp
Choosing between Bitpanda and Bitstamp is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much of your money arrives once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our database, Bitpanda sits in the broker group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while Bitstamp belongs to crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.
Below the calculator we walk through how we work out the cost, what each one is good at, and who should pick which. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
A money service and a crypto exchange
These two come from different corners of the market: broker versus crypto exchange. Their offers overlap only in part. Only the shared conversions appear in our scenarios, so the rest of each offer stays out of view.
Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.
If you only want to change currency or send money abroad, a crypto platform is mostly a detour. If you want to buy or sell crypto, an exchange offers more choice in assets and order types.
Is your money safe?
Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
Bitpanda or Bitstamp: which fits your situation?
When you travel, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
If you send money abroad regularly, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.
When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
Why the amount can change the winner
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Why not use both?
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
For anything above everyday amounts, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It is a quick check that pays off.
When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.
Fees vs exchange-rate margin
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
The short answer
In 4 of 4 conversions that both providers offer, Bitstamp delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Bitstamp the edge for most typical transfers.
Still, Bitpanda is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows where Bitpanda comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Bitpanda may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Delivery time and ease of use
The fastest delivery we have on record for Bitpanda is Instant; for Bitstamp it is Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.
How we compare Bitpanda and Bitstamp
The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
