Bitpanda versus Kraken

Picking Bitpanda or Kraken is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are counted. That is the gap we measure here.

In our database, Bitpanda sits in the broker group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while Kraken is filed under crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says something about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain our method, where each provider tends to do well and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, today’s result is not set in stone.

Why not use both?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. It is perfectly normal to keep Bitpanda for one task and Kraken for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.

When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

Which one is cheaper?

For 4 out of 4 scenarios we can test on both sides, Kraken left you with more money at live rates. If cost is your main concern, start with Kraken.

Still, Bitpanda is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows the routes where Bitpanda does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

There is more to it than price. Bitpanda may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

Speed and convenience

Fastest delivery: Instant at Bitpanda and Instant at Kraken. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

How we compare Bitpanda and Kraken

Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: broker and crypto exchange. Their offers overlap only in part. Only the shared conversions appear in our scenarios, so the rest of each offer stays out of view.

Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. A crypto exchange is built for buying, selling and storing digital assets, with regular money as the way in and out. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.

For everyday currency needs, a crypto platform is mostly a detour. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.

Bitpanda or Kraken: which fits your situation?

For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

If you send money abroad regularly, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.

What to check on safety

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

With crypto platforms, look a little further: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
