Bitpanda vs eToro: a side-by-side cost check

Picking Bitpanda or eToro comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are counted. That is the gap we measure here.

On our site, Bitpanda belongs to the broker group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while eToro belongs to broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says something about where they overlap and where they do not.

Further down this page we walk through our method, where each provider tends to do well, and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Switching between Bitpanda and eToro

Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It takes a minute and can save real money.

If you switch, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

How fast the money arrives

Fastest delivery: Instant at Bitpanda and Instant at eToro. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

Why the amount can change the winner

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. With Bitpanda or eToro, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Verdict: Bitpanda comes out cheaper

In 3 of 3 scenarios we can test on both sides, Bitpanda came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Bitpanda the edge for most typical transfers.

That does not make eToro the wrong choice. Check the table above to see which conversions eToro still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, eToro is simply the cheaper option for you.

There is more to it than price. eToro may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

How we calculate the cost

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

Which one suits you?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Same category, different details

Bitpanda and eToro belong to the same category, broker, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.

Start with coverage: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. Bitpanda handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals; eToro handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

What to check on safety

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Where the real cost hides

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Also look beyond the conversion: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
