Bitpanda or BullionVault
Deciding between Bitpanda and BullionVault comes down to more than the brand name. What matters is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.
On our site, Bitpanda falls into the broker group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while BullionVault sits in precious metals dealer and covers Currencies, Precious metals. That alone tells you something about which jobs each one is built for.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Our verdict
Across 3 of the 3 comparisons we can test on both sides, BullionVault came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. If cost is your main concern, start with BullionVault.
Still, Bitpanda is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find which conversions Bitpanda still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
There is more to it than price. You may already have a verified account with Bitpanda, which saves a sign-up. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
How fast the money arrives
Bitpanda lists its quickest option as Instant, while BullionVault lists Same day. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Which one suits you?
For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.
Why the amount can change the winner
The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Regulation and safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Why not use both?
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.
When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
How we calculate the cost
The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
