Bitvavo versus eToro

Picking Bitvavo or eToro is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

In our comparison, Bitvavo sits in the crypto exchange group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while eToro sits in broker and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator we walk through our method, what each one is good at and how to combine the two. Rates on this page are live, so the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Which one is cheaper?: Bitvavo is cheaper more often

In 2 of 2 scenarios we can test on both sides, Bitvavo delivered the better result at live rates. That gives Bitvavo the edge for most typical transfers.

This does not rule out eToro. Check the table above to see which conversions eToro still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward eToro. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

How fast the money arrives

Bitvavo lists its quickest option as Instant, while eToro lists Instant. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.

Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Regulation and safety

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Who should pick Bitvavo and who eToro?

When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

If you send money abroad regularly, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. Nothing here is investment advice.

Can you use Bitvavo and eToro together?

Using two providers side by side is common. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

If you switch, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and keep a copy of your transaction history.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

These two come from different corners of the market: crypto exchange and broker. Their offers overlap only in part. Only the shared conversions appear in our scenarios, so the rest of each offer stays out of view.

Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. Keep this in mind when you read the result.

When crypto is not on your list, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. If you want to buy or sell crypto, an exchange offers more choice in assets and order types.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

How the numbers are worked out

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

This comparison is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
