eToro vs Kraken: the real cost compared

Deciding between eToro and Kraken is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.

In our database, eToro falls into the broker group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Kraken sits in crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. Those two labels say a fair bit about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and who should pick which. Because the rates are live, today’s result is not set in stone.

Safety checks before you sign up

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

With crypto platforms, look a little further: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.

Speed and convenience

eToro lists its quickest option as Instant, while Kraken lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.

Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

Which one suits you?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. Nothing here is investment advice.

Which one is cheaper?

For 3 out of 3 scenarios that both providers offer, Kraken came out cheaper after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Kraken.

Still, eToro is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows where eToro comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, eToro is simply the cheaper option for you.

Price is also not the only factor. eToro may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

Why the amount can change the winner

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

How the numbers are worked out

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

The fee is only half the story

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: broker and crypto exchange. They overlap, but only partly. Only the shared conversions appear in our scenarios, so the rest of each offer stays out of view.

A money service focuses on paying, spending and sending in regular currencies. A crypto exchange revolves around digital assets; regular currencies are mostly the on-ramp and off-ramp. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.

When crypto is not on your list, the money service is usually the more natural choice. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.

Why not use both?

Using two providers side by side is common. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

Before every larger transfer, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and download your statements for your records.
