eToro vs Finst: the real cost compared

Choosing between eToro and Finst comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.

On our site, eToro sits in the broker category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Finst belongs to crypto exchange and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, the outcome can shift during the day.

Which one is cheaper?

In 2 of 2 scenarios we can test on both sides, Finst delivered the better result at live rates. If cost is your main concern, start with Finst.

That does not make eToro the wrong choice. The scenario table above shows where eToro comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward eToro. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

Can you use eToro and Finst together?

Using two providers side by side is common. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.

If you switch, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and download your statements for your records.

How the numbers are worked out

Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

GoldexPay is independent. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The numbers decide, not the commission.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

These two come from different corners of the market: broker and crypto exchange. There is some overlap, but not much. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.

A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. Keep this in mind when you read the result.

When crypto is not on your list, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.

Does the amount matter?

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. Before a big transfer with eToro or Finst, read the current pricing on their site.

Who should pick eToro and who Finst?

When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.

Speed and convenience

eToro lists its quickest option as Instant, while Finst lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Convenience counts too: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

What to check on safety

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
