HTX vs Kraken
Choosing between HTX and Kraken comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our database, HTX belongs to the crypto exchange group and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Kraken is filed under crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so today’s result is not set in stone.
Our verdict
In 4 of 4 conversions that both providers offer, HTX left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes HTX the default pick.
Still, Kraken is not out of the race. Check the table above to see which conversions Kraken still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, Kraken is simply the cheaper option for you.
Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Kraken, which saves a sign-up. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Safety checks before you sign up
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
HTX vs Kraken as crypto exchanges
With two crypto exchanges, the cost is spread over several layers. On instant buy screens the main cost is often the spread rather than a listed fee. Advanced trading usually works with maker and taker fees, and a limit order that waits in the book often costs less than buying at market.
Moving money in and out also costs something. How you fund your account, by bank transfer, card or another method, changes the cost. When you withdraw crypto, a network fee applies, and it differs per coin and per exchange.
And then there is the question of who holds your coins. As long as your crypto sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys. Whether you keep coins on HTX, on Kraken or in your own wallet, factor that choice into the cost.
Two rivals in the same category
HTX and Kraken belong to the same category, crypto exchange, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. On paper, HTX supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies and Kraken supports Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.
Then compare price on the route you actually use, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
Where the real cost hides
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
So we never compare fees on their own. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
Why the amount can change the winner
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
How we calculate the cost
Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Speed: HTX vs Kraken
HTX lists its quickest option as Instant, while Kraken lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Can you use HTX and Kraken together?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
For anything above everyday amounts, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Who should pick HTX and who Kraken?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
