Revolut vs Western Union

Choosing between Revolut and Western Union is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much of your money arrives once the fee and the rate markup are added up. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, Revolut sits in the broker category and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while Western Union belongs to money transfer service with support for Currencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator we explain how we work out the cost, what each one is good at, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.

The short answer: Revolut comes out cheaper

In 7 of 7 scenarios that both providers offer, Revolut delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Revolut.

Still, Western Union is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where Western Union does better, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, Western Union is simply the cheaper option for you.

Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Western Union, which saves a sign-up. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

How fast the money arrives

Fastest delivery: Instant at Revolut and Within minutes at Western Union. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Convenience counts too: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. Before a big transfer with Revolut or Western Union, read the current pricing on their site.

Is your money safe?

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.

Why not use both?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It is a quick check that pays off.

When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.

The fee is only half the story

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

So we never compare fees on their own. Revolut and Western Union may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Also look beyond the conversion: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Our method

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Who should pick Revolut and who Western Union?

For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

To send money to a bank account abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.

When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.
