Revolut vs Xe
Deciding between Revolut and Xe is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup are counted. That is the gap we measure here.
In our database, Revolut sits in the broker category and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while Xe is filed under money transfer service and covers Currencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about where they overlap and where they do not.
Further down this page we walk through our method, what each one is good at, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.
Delivery time and ease of use
Fastest delivery: Instant at Revolut and 1–2 business days at Xe. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Safety checks before you sign up
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
Small amounts vs large amounts
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Why not use both?
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, check the calculator on this page, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It takes a minute and can save real money.
If you switch, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
Who should pick Revolut and who Xe?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.
For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
How we compare Revolut and Xe
Every provider earns money in two ways: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
The fee is only half the story
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Revolut and Xe may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
The short answer
For 7 out of 7 comparisons we can test on both sides, Revolut came out cheaper at live rates. On price alone, that makes Revolut the default pick.
Still, Xe is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find which conversions Xe still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Xe, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
