Silver to Gold at a glance

The page you are reading follows the exchange rate between Silver (XAG) and Gold (XAU) and compares it with the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. At the latest update on October 30, 2026, one XAG is worth 0.012661 XAU, while 1 XAU is worth 78.9825 XAG.

The rate shown above is the mid-market rate. It sits exactly halfway between the buying and selling prices on the wholesale market. It works as a neutral benchmark: it contains no profit margin and no fees, and that is why you rarely get it as a private customer.

What you actually receive depends on two separate costs: the margin a provider adds to that rate and any fixed or percentage fee. In the sections below we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and give concrete ways to lose less on the exchange when you change XAG into XAU.

What banks and apps really charge for XAG to XAU

The majority of services will not give you the mid-market rate as such. Instead they offer a rate that is a little less favourable and earn on the difference. People call this the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that you lose roughly 2 XAG on every 100 XAG, without it ever appearing as a fee.

On top of the margin, many providers add a visible fee. This is usually a flat charge per payment, a percentage of the amount or a mix of both. For transfers sent through the banking network the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, which shrinks the amount that finally arrives.

Take a close look at anything sold as commission-free. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. The reliable test is the final XAU figure for an identical XAG amount, which is how the table above is sorted.

How our XAG/XAU comparison works

We start from the live mid-market rate for XAG/XAU. For each provider we apply its published fees and the margin it adds to the rate, and work out how much XAU the recipient would end up with. In total 0 providers are included, so you can see the differences at a glance.

We update the rates every 30 minutes, and the date on the page shows when the data was last updated. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, because their rate can move between our updates, especially when markets are busy.

GoldexPay is independent. Some of the links are affiliate links, which help pay for the site. They have no influence on the order: providers are sorted purely by how much XAU the recipient gets.

One year of XAG to XAU

Across the last year, the XAG/XAU rate has changed by -19.23%. In that period the highest level was 0.018658 XAU for one XAG, and the low point came in at 0.012661. Today’s rate of 0.012661 can be measured against those two levels.

The spread between the year’s extremes shows how much the rate can move in practice. On a large conversion, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, occasionally more than the difference between providers.

Rates are pushed around by central bank policy, economic data and shifts in risk appetite. The statistics here are historical, not a forecast. If you want to act on a certain rate, use an alert or limit order rather than a hunch.

Reading a gold or silver price

The standard unit for metals is the troy ounce, slightly heavier than a regular ounce, at around 31.1 grams. The codes XAU, XAG, XPT and XPD stand for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, which is why they appear here like any other currency. The figure above refers to one troy ounce.

That figure is the spot price: the price professionals pay for large quantities. Buy a coin or small bar and you pay a premium on top, to pay for production, distribution and the seller’s margin. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.

Ownership comes in more than one shape. Keeping coins or bars yourself means arranging storage and insurance. Vault storage through a dealer comes with storage costs but takes care of security. Funds and certificates follow the price without you owning a bar directly.

Check how tax applies as well. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. This page shows the price and does not tell you whether to buy or sell.

Tips for converting XAG to XAU

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A provider with a low fee can still be expensive because the margin can make up the difference. The fairest figure to compare is how much XAU arrives for your XAG, and that already includes both margin and fee.

When you pay by card abroad, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. This is called dynamic currency conversion. It tends to be among the most expensive ways to convert. Choose the local currency so your bank or card issuer handles the exchange.

Timing plays a role too. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. When there is no deadline, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. That avoids guessing, but there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

Finally, look at how you pay. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Sending less often but in larger amounts also cuts the impact of fixed fees.

Staying safe with bigger XAG to XAU transfers

Check the provider’s licence first. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Regulation includes rules on keeping your money apart from the company’s own, which protects you if something goes wrong.

Verify every detail of the recipient. Once money has left, getting it back is difficult. Unexpected changes to payment details are a classic warning sign: confirm by phone using a number you already know.

Big sums usually trigger extra verification. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, like a statement or a sales contract. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. A rate lock, where offered, removes uncertainty while the money is on its way.
