The XAU/XAG exchange rate at a glance
This overview tracks the price relationship between Gold (XAU) and Silver (XAG) and sets it next to the cost of an actual conversion at a range of providers. At the latest update on October 31, 2026, 1 XAU buys 78.8687 XAG, and one XAG comes to 0.012679 XAU.
That headline number is the interbank mid rate. It sits exactly halfway between what wholesale traders pay for XAU and what they ask for it. Think of it as a neutral benchmark: no fee or margin is built in, so you rarely get it as a private customer.
What ends up on the XAG side depends on two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Further down we explain how those costs work, put them side by side and list practical steps to lose less on the exchange when you change XAU into XAG.
How the XAU/XAG precious metal price works
Precious metals are quoted per troy ounce, slightly heavier than a regular ounce, at around 31.1 grams. In currency notation, gold is XAU, silver XAG, platinum XPT and palladium XPD, which is why they appear here like any other currency. One unit in this pair means one troy ounce.
The rate is based on the spot price: the wholesale price for immediate delivery of large bars. Coins and small bars cost more than spot, because of manufacturing and dealer costs. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat below spot.
There are different ways to hold metal. Keeping coins or bars yourself means arranging storage and insurance. An allocated vault account comes with storage costs but takes care of security. Paper products track the price but do not always give you physical metal.
Check how tax applies as well. In the EU, investment gold is generally exempt from VAT, while silver usually is not. The information here is meant as background, not as advice.
Getting the most XAG for your XAU
Judge on what arrives, not on what is advertised. A small fee on its own says little because the margin can make up the difference. What you want to know is the amount received, and that already includes both margin and fee.
When you pay by card abroad, a terminal may offer to charge you in your home currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. It usually comes with a steep markup. Choose the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.
Watch the timing as well. Rates quoted on a Saturday or Sunday can include a weekend surcharge. If you are not in a hurry, you can set a target rate and let the provider convert only when it is reached. It saves you from checking the rate every day, though the target may never be reached.
Also check how you fund the transfer. A credit card may be treated as a cash advance by your card issuer, and funding by bank transfer tends to keep costs down. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer also cuts the impact of fixed fees.
What banks and apps really charge for XAU to XAG
Nearly every bank and app will not give you the mid-market rate itself. Instead they shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. This is known as the markup. A markup of 2%, for example, means that for every 100 XAU you convert, about 2 XAU worth disappears before the money arrives.
On top of the margin, most banks add a visible fee. That can be a flat charge per payment, a percentage of the amount or both at once. With international bank payments the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, and those only show up at the end.
Look twice at services that advertise free transfers. In many cases the margin in the rate simply does the work of the fee. What really counts is the total amount that arrives in XAG for an identical XAU amount, which is how the table above is sorted.
Staying safe with bigger XAU to XAG transfers
Make sure the provider is licensed. Look for authorisation from the FCA in the UK or the financial regulator in your own country. Regulated firms have to safeguard client funds and that offers protection if the company fails.
Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. Mistakes are rarely fixed quickly with transfers abroad. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.
For large amounts, expect extra checks. Providers may ask for proof of where the money comes from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Some services offer better rates or a personal contact for larger transfers. Some also let you lock in a rate for a short period.
How we rank providers for XAU to XAG
Every calculation begins with the mid-market rate of 78.8687. Each provider’s published fee and markup are applied on top, and work out how much XAG the recipient would end up with. The comparison covers 0 providers, ranked from most to least received.
We update the rates every 30 minutes, so the page reflects the market of October 31, 2026. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, since markets keep moving.
No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. We may earn a commission through some links, which help pay for the site. The order is never affected by them: the only ranking criterion is the amount received.
One year of XAU to XAG
Over the past twelve months, the exchange rate has changed by +23.64%. During that year the highest level was 78.8687 XAG per XAU, and the bottom of the range was 53.5977. At 78.8687, the rate today is easy to place within that band.
The spread between the year’s extremes is a useful reminder of how far the rate can travel. When you convert a substantial sum, timing has a visible effect on the outcome, even when the fee stays the same.
Rates are pushed around by news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. These figures describe the past and say nothing about what comes next. If you want to act on a certain rate, it is more practical to set an alert than to guess.
