Understanding Cardano and ADA's Roles
Cardano operates as a proof-of-stake blockchain, and ADA acts as the native currency within its system. The launch happened in 2017. What stands out about Cardano is its research-heavy approach: changes to how the network works aren't just dreamed up and coded, but described in peer-reviewed academic papers first, so you'll notice new features sometimes roll out a bit behind quicker rivals. Both the network and the coin draw their names from milestone figures in mathematics and computing, Gerolamo Cardano and Ada Lovelace, respectively.
ADA serves a few purposes. It's what you spend to pay fees every time you transact on the network. For those interested in supporting the system, you can delegate ADA to a stake pool, which helps power the network and returns rewards to you. You'll also use ADA within the many apps built for Cardano, think decentralized exchanges, lending tools, NFT platforms. Keep in mind, lots of assets on Cardano are built as native tokens, so not every asset you see in a Cardano wallet is ADA, our coins versus tokens page walks through how they differ.

How Cardano runs under the hood
Cardano relies on a system called Ouroboros as its consensus method. There are no miners here: instead, block creation is assigned among those who have staked ADA, and the more stake a pool gathers, the better its odds of being chosen to add the next block. No specialized mining equipment is necessary, so the whole process is less energy-intensive. If you'd like to compare that to how proof of work runs, you might want to start at proof of work versus proof of stake.
Time gets structured into five-day stretches known as epochs; your staking rewards are lined up and paid out at the end of each one. Everything is set with a hard ceiling: only 45 billion ADA will ever be allowed by the protocol. Instead of mining, new ADA enters the system from a reserve, added to the pool as staking rewards.
Cardano's accounting uses an expanded unspent transaction output model, borrowing from Bitcoin but modernized for smart contracts, which means transactions either proceed as tested or roll back entirely, you pay when a transaction goes through, not for a failed attempt. Smart contracts arrived with the Alonzo upgrade in 2021, followed later by governance tools so ADA owners could weigh in on changes to the protocol.
ADA Price Drivers
Right now, ADA trades at 0.1957 USD. You can see what happened in the last 30 days: -20.60%, over a year: -67.43%, or even five years: -70.01%. During the past year, ADA ranged from 0.1436 USD up to 0.6131 USD, so, price shifts can be wide.
Wider market moves usually lead, so when big coins like Bitcoin move, ADA tends to follow, though its moves can be stronger in either direction. Extra volatility sometimes comes up from Cardano-specific triggers: news about upgrades, how actively the network is used, fresh exchange listings or removals, and regulatory decisions in large markets. ADA’s also part of the broader competition among smart contract platforms: how platforms like Ethereum or Solana are doing can directly affect interest here.
Market history gives only context, not predictions. Use ranges as a rough guide, but don't treat them as a roadmap for the future.
Steps, Costs and Tips for Buying Cardano
Getting ADA means following a few steps: you open an exchange account, complete identity checks, deposit funds, usually by bank transfer or card, and finally buy ADA itself. Before you start, check that your exchange supports both ADA and your country’s payment options.
Your cost isn’t just the quoted trading fee. The gap between buy and sell prices, the spread, often ends up being the real cost, especially if you’re using an app advertising zero fees. Card deposits can carry extra costs above bank transfers. Some exchanges also charge an ADA withdrawal fee when you move coins out to your own wallet. Need clarity on where fees could go? Our guides to the buy-sell spread and exchange fees spell that out.
Kraken, Coinbase, Bitvavo and Bitpanda each support ADA and are often first stops for buyers. For European banking and euro payments, Bitvavo or Bitpanda might suit best; if you’re looking for global reach, Kraken and Coinbase cover more places. Our Kraken vs Coinbase side-by-side can help you decide between Kraken and Coinbase, if it comes down to those two. One last detail: using a limit order can let you set your price, while a market order takes whatever’s available; to compare these options, check out the market vs limit orders explainer.
How to keep ADA: custody and wallet choices
Leaving ADA on an exchange means it’s held for you by the provider. Your account shows a balance, but you don’t control the private keys, so your security depends on how the exchange performs financially and technically. For a small sum you plan to sell soon, that’s usually enough. If you expect to hold longer-term or store a bigger amount, moving to a wallet where you manage the keys gives firmer control, our custodial vs non-custodial wallets guide covers this in depth.
Options for Cardano software wallets include Eternl, Lace, Yoroi and Daedalus; leading hardware wallet brands also support ADA. A hardware wallet keeps your private keys off your main computer, which is best for substantial balances, if you’d like to know more, read how hardware wallets work. Whichever wallet style you pick, jot down that recovery phrase on paper only, not on your phone or online, and never fill it in on a web page. Whoever possesses that phrase can empty your wallet. You’ll find more about this in our seed phrase article.
ADA wallet addresses begin with addr1, and only interact with the Cardano network. Sending ADA to a Bitcoin or Ethereum address will result in permanent loss. For your first withdrawal from an exchange, send the smallest test transfer you can, see that it arrives, then move your main balance, the withdrawing to your own wallet steps are here for reference. A point to bear in mind: holding ADA yourself lets you stake from the wallet; coins stay in your possession as they earn rewards.
Understand the risks and taxes before you start
The ADA price can swing hard, including sharp drops, it’s happened before. Only put in money you wouldn’t have to touch for a significant period.
Cardano brings its own risks. Apps built on the platform can include bugs, and there’s a steady arrival of fresh tokens; unrequested airdrops and links offering "free" ADA are routinely scams. Don’t connect your wallet through links from unsolicited messages or adverts. And staking payouts aren’t fixed or guaranteed, with pool reliability making a difference in the outcome; you might want to review what’s involved at staking.
Tax rules depend entirely on your country, so you’ll need to review local guidance or consult an adviser. In many places, selling ADA for fiat, or for another cryptocurrency, counts as a taxable event, and staking rewards can be taxed as soon as you receive them. You should keep thorough records of every buy, sale, transfer and reward, including dates and values, since piecing them together after the fact is much harder. Frequently asked questions
What is the Cardano price today?
ADA is currently priced at 0.1957 USD in your local currency, updated live. Over the last 30 days, the change has been -20.60%. Crypto markets trade without pause, so you’ll always see the latest number here.
Is Cardano the same as ADA?
No, Cardano refers to the blockchain system, while ADA is the coin that operates on it. People sometimes use the names interchangeably when talking about prices, but ADA is the correct exchange ticker.
Where can I buy Cardano?
Can I stake Cardano and earn rewards?
Yes, you can stake ADA. By delegating your coins to a stake pool from a supported wallet, you’ll receive payouts every five-day epoch. Your coins remain fully in your wallet; there’s no lockup, but rates do fluctuate and are not promised. Some exchanges allow staking as a service, usually they keep a percentage of your rewards.
How many ADA coins will ever exist?
There’s a maximum of 45 billion ADA coins set by the Cardano protocol, an amount that can’t be increased without altering the rules of the network itself. Not all of that total is in circulation yet.
Can I buy less than one whole ADA?
You can. ADA divides down to six decimal places; its smallest part is a lovelace. This means you can buy whatever partial amount your exchange allows, without needing to acquire a whole coin.
