How a SWIFT/BIC code from Indonesia is structured

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

GASS Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
ID Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
J1 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

SWIFT/BIC codes in Indonesia

In Indonesia our database holds 772 SWIFT/BIC codes. Every code points to a bank or one of its branches, so a payment from abroad reaches the right place.

Each bank has its own page showing its main code and, where available, branch codes. The sections below explain the structure of the codes, what transfers cost and the checks worth doing before a payment.

Receiving money in Indonesia from abroad

When you are waiting for money from abroad in Indonesia, send the payer all details at once. That means: your full name exactly as it appears on the account, your account number or IBAN, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and, often, your address.

Look up the bank in the list on this page to check its code. It helps to add the name and city of your bank as well.

Do not be surprised if the incoming amount is smaller than the amount on the sender’s receipt. Fees for incoming transfers differ from bank to bank. For business payments, agree how the fees are split, so nobody is left short.

Sending money to Indonesia for less

What you pay for a payment to Indonesia is made up of more than one component – not only the fee you see. Besides a fixed fee, intermediary banks can deduct a charge, and when the money is converted the bank usually applies a less favourable rate than the actual market rate.

The markup on the rate is often the largest part of the cost. Compare the bank’s rate with the mid-market rate. The difference is your real cost.

For many routes, a specialist provider turns out to be cheaper than a bank, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay lists these providers side by side, showing what actually arrives in Indonesia.

Check the code before you pay

Ask the recipient to copy the account details directly from their online banking. An incorrect BIC can cause a delay, a returned payment or extra fees.

Our SWIFT/BIC directory draws on public sources that we update periodically. Even so, banks merge, rename themselves or change codes. For any payment that matters, check the BIC with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is not a bank and is not affiliated with the banks listed.

Watch out for invoices with changed bank details – a common fraud method. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine: criminals use real codes too.

SWIFT codes in Indonesia: banks under :letter

Here you see a filtered list: only banks in Indonesia with a name starting with :letter. The counts in the introduction always cover all banks in Indonesia, not just this letter.

Cannot find the bank? The registered name may start with a different letter. The complete list remains one click away if the letter filter does not help.

The largest SWIFT network in Indonesia: Bank Negara Indonesia - Pt (Persero)

Bank Negara Indonesia - Pt (Persero) leads the list of Indonesia banks when it comes to the number of SWIFT/BIC codes. The head office uses BNINIDJAXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.

Banks differ in whether they register branch codes – a high count is not a measure of size. Paying someone at Bank Negara Indonesia - Pt (Persero)? Use BNINIDJAXXX except when a specific branch code is requested.

What the letters in a Indonesia BIC mean

SWIFT/BIC codes follow the same format worldwide: eight characters plus an optional three-character extension. Characters one to four identify the bank, characters five and six are the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.

No matter which bank, all Indonesia codes have the same country code in positions five and six, namely the ISO code of Indonesia. Codes with other letters in that position belong to another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.

The optional last three characters identify a specific branch; XXX means the head office. For most transfers the head office code is fine, unless the recipient gives you a branch code.

Why a transfer to Indonesia needs a SWIFT code

Because Indonesia is outside SEPA, a transfer from abroad normally goes through SWIFT. This means you always need the SWIFT/BIC code of the receiving bank.

Depending on the country, accounts are identified by a domestic account number instead of an IBAN. Ask the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for incoming international payments – many banks give clear instructions for this. On the way to Indonesia, a transfer may pass through correspondent banks that charge for their part.

Tracking a payment to Indonesia

An international transfer to Indonesia usually takes one to a few business days. Payments made late in the day or just before a weekend or public holiday usually start the next business day.

When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact their own bank and ask for the status or the UETR – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Save your transfer receipt – you will need it if something goes wrong.
