A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

UNIR Bank code

2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Select a bank from the list to see the head office code and its other codes, plus practical notes for sending and receiving money. The rest of this page explain how the codes work, what transfers cost and how to avoid mistakes before a payment.

What the letters in a Indonesia BIC mean

A SWIFT code is either 8 or 11 characters long and follows a fixed pattern. First comes four letters for the bank, then two letters for the country and a two-character location code.

You can recognise a bank code from Indonesia from letters five and six. Codes with a different country code belong to a bank abroad, even if the bank name looks familiar.

When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the main office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

International payments to Indonesia and the BIC

Indonesia is not part of the SEPA area, the European zone for uniform euro payments. International transfers to Indonesia normally go through the SWIFT network, and the BIC of the receiving bank is required.

Depending on the country, accounts are identified by a domestic account number rather than an IBAN. The recipient’s bank often provides instructions for payments from abroad, and it is worth following them to the letter. SWIFT payments sometimes go via one or more intermediary banks, each of which may deduct a fee.

What a sender needs to pay you in Indonesia

Someone abroad who wants to pay you will ask for a few details from you – incomplete details often cause delays. Share the account holder’s name, the IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and your address.

The code of your bank appears in our list but always compare it with your own bank details. Certain banks also ask for the name and address of your bank, so keep it at hand.

Do not be surprised if the amount credited is below what the sender paid. Charges on incoming payments differ per bank; check the price list of your bank. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs, especially for larger amounts.

About our data and how to check a code

Ask the recipient to copy the account details straight from their online banking. A wrong code can cause a delay, a payment being sent back or extra fees, so compare it with the list on this page.

Our SWIFT/BIC directory is based on publicly available sources that we update periodically. Even so, banks merge or change codes. Treat our data as a reference, not as the final word: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.

Watch out for invoices with changed bank details, especially when they come by email. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine: criminals use real codes too.

Transfer times to Indonesia

There is no single answer for transfers to Indonesia: some arrive the same day or the next while others need several business days. Transfers sent late in the day or just before a weekend or public holiday usually go out a business day later.

Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi, which lets them follow a payment from bank to bank. Each payment carries a unique transaction reference, the UETR. Keep the payment confirmation until the money has arrived.

What a transfer to Indonesia really costs

When you transfer money to Indonesia via your bank, the stated fee is only part of the cost. On top of a fixed fee, correspondent banks can take a cut, and when the money is converted the bank usually uses a rate below the actual market rate.

Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate. Compare the bank’s rate with the mid-market rate that you find on financial sites; the gap is what conversion costs you.

Money transfer services often use rates closer to the mid-market rate and lower fees. GoldexPay lists transfer services next to each other, showing what actually arrives in Indonesia.
