What a transfer to Indonesia really costs
The price of a payment to Indonesia is made up of several parts – not only the fee you see. There is the transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the margin on the exchange rate.
The markup on the rate tends to be the biggest cost item. An easy check: set the rate you get against the mid-market rate and look at the difference.
For a lot of currency pairs, a specialist provider is less expensive than a bank. GoldexPay lists transfer services side by side so you can see what actually arrives in Indonesia.
International payments to Indonesia and the BIC
Indonesia is not part of the SEPA area, the European zone for uniform euro payments. Payments from abroad normally go through the SWIFT network – which is why you need the BIC of the recipient’s bank.
In some countries, the account is identified by a domestic account number rather than an IBAN and sometimes a local routing or branch code. Ask the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for incoming international payments. SWIFT payments can pass through one or more intermediary banks.
Which bank in Indonesia has the most codes?
Of all banks in Indonesia, Bank Negara Indonesia - Pt (Persero) has the largest number of SWIFT codes. Its head office code is BNINIDJAXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.
Practice differs in whether they register branch codes – a high count is not a measure of size. Making a payment to Bank Negara Indonesia - Pt (Persero)? Use BNINIDJAXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.
Check the code before you pay
The safest source for a SWIFT code is the bank details provided by the recipient. If the code you have differs from the code listed here, do not guess: check with the recipient or the bank.
We gather SWIFT/BIC codes from publicly available data and update them regularly. Still, banks merge or change codes and our data may lag behind. For a payment of any size, confirm the BIC with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site, not a bank.
Watch out for invoices containing changed bank details, especially when they come by email. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine – scammers use the codes of real banks.
How SWIFT codes from Indonesia are built
Each SWIFT/BIC code has eight or eleven characters, always in the same order. Characters one to four stand for the bank, characters five and six form the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.
No matter which bank, all Indonesia codes have the same fifth and sixth letters. When those two letters point to another country, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else – worth double-checking.
The last three characters, if present, identify a branch or department; XXX is used for the head office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
How long does a transfer to Indonesia take?
There is no single answer for payments to Indonesia: many arrive within a day, others take several business days. Payments made after the cut-off time or just before a weekend or public holiday often go out a business day later.
When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact their own bank and ask for the status or the UETR – the receiving bank often cannot see a payment that has not arrived. Keep your transfer receipt – you will need it if something goes wrong.
Incoming international payments in Indonesia
For a transfer from abroad in Indonesia, the person paying you needs more than the BIC. In practice that means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your IBAN or account number, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and usually your address.
Look up the bank in the list above and compare the code with your own bank details – your bank statement is the final word. Certain sending banks may also ask for the name and address of your bank; it does no harm to include it.
Do not be surprised if the incoming amount is below the amount on the sender’s receipt. Intermediary banks may deduct a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate comes on top. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs before the money is sent.
