The way a SWIFT/BIC code from Malaysia is structured
A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- LABN Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- MY Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- 21 Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
SWIFT/BIC codes in Malaysia
This directory contains 321 banks and other institutions in Malaysia and 413 SWIFT/BIC codes between them. Each code identifies a bank or a specific branch or department, so a payment from abroad reaches the right place.
Every bank has its own page with the head office code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. Further down you can read how codes from Malaysia are built, how to send money there at a fair price and how to check a code before you pay.
Check the code before you pay
The safest source for a SWIFT code is the bank details provided by the recipient. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a returned payment or extra fees – compare it with the code in our list.
We gather bank codes using publicly available data and update them from time to time. Institutions merge, close branches and change codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. Treat our data as a starting point, not as the final word. GoldexPay is not a bank.
Be wary of payment requests containing a new account. A real SWIFT code says nothing about whether a request is genuine – scammers use the codes of real banks.
SWIFT codes in Malaysia: banks under :letter
This filter limits the list to banks from Malaysia that begin with :letter, so you can find a bank faster. The figures for Malaysia on this page cover all 321 banks, not just the ones under :letter.
If the bank you need does not appear under :letter, try another letter. Try the full list for Malaysia if you are not sure the exact name.
How SWIFT codes from Malaysia are built
Every SWIFT/BIC code has eight or eleven characters. First comes a four-letter bank code, then a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
For banks in Malaysia, characters five and six show the ISO country code of Malaysia – that is the quickest way to spot one. When those two letters do not match Malaysia, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else – worth double-checking.
The optional last three characters stand for a specific branch; XXX means the head office. For most transfers the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.
What a transfer to Malaysia really costs
An international bank payment to Malaysia often costs rather more than the fee suggests. You pay the transfer fee, possibly charges from intermediary banks and, most importantly, the exchange rate markup when currencies differ.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate, not in the fee: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. Compare the bank’s rate against the mid-market rate; the gap is what conversion costs you.
For a lot of routes, a transfer service is less expensive than a bank. GoldexPay compares what recipients in Malaysia receive across providers, so you can pick the cheapest route.
When does money sent to Malaysia arrive?
How fast a payment reaches Malaysia is determined by a few things: the currency, the number of banks in between, daily processing deadlines and differences in time zone. Bank holidays in Malaysia or in the sending country add extra days to the journey.
When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact their own bank and ask for the status or the UETR. Money transfer services usually provide a status online so you can follow the payment.
United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad and its SWIFT codes
Among the 321 institutions we list, United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad has the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes in Malaysia. The head office uses UOVBMYKLXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.
Banks differ in how many codes they register – a high count is not a measure of size. Unless a branch code is given, the head office code UOVBMYKLXXX works for a payment to United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad.
Incoming international payments in Malaysia
When you expect money from abroad on an account in Malaysia, give the sender a complete set of details. Share your name as registered with the bank, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and your address, which some banks require.
Look up your bank in the list on this page to check its code – your bank statement is the final word. Certain sending banks also want the name and address of your bank.
The amount you receive is often less than what was sent. Charges on incoming payments differ per bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. For business payments, agree how the fees are split.
International payments to Malaysia and the BIC
To pay into Malaysia you almost always need a SWIFT/BIC code. Without the BIC, your bank cannot process the payment.
In some countries, the account is identified by a domestic account number instead of an IBAN. Check with the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for payments from abroad; banks often publish instructions for this. Before it arrives, a payment can pass through correspondent banks.
