The way a SWIFT/BIC code from Malaysia is built up
A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:
- OABB Bank code
- 4 letters that identify the bank.
- MY Country code
- 2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
- KL Location code
- 2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
- XXX Branch code
- 3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.
SWIFT/BIC codes in Malaysia
Here you will find the SWIFT/BIC codes of 321 institutions in Malaysia – 413 codes altogether. You will need a SWIFT/BIC code mainly for payments across borders and for payments in a foreign currency.
Look for the bank you need below and open its page to see the full list of codes and what else a transfer requires. Below the list we explain how codes from Malaysia are built, how to send money there at a fair price and what to check before you pay.
What the letters in a Malaysia BIC mean
Every SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters in a fixed order. It starts with a four-letter bank code, then a two-letter country code and a two-character location code.
No matter which bank, all Malaysia codes have the same country code in positions five and six, namely the ISO code of Malaysia. Codes with other letters in that position belong to another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.
When a code ends in XXX, it refers to the head office and the short version works just as well. For most transfers the head office code is what you need.
Receiving money in Malaysia from abroad
When you are waiting for a payment from another country on an account in Malaysia, send the payer all details at once. That means: your full name exactly as it appears on the account, your account number or IBAN, the SWIFT/BIC code of your bank and usually your postal address.
Look up your bank in the list on this page to check its code. It helps to add the name and city of your bank as well.
Expect that the incoming amount is smaller than the amount on the sender’s receipt. Correspondent banks can take a fee, and if the money is converted, an exchange rate margin applies. Agree with the sender who covers the fees, especially for larger amounts.

Cannot find the bank? Its official name might start with a different letter. Try the full list for Malaysia if you are not sure how the name is spelled.
Verifying a SWIFT code from Malaysia
The safest source for a SWIFT code is the bank details provided by the recipient: an invoice, a statement or their online banking. An incorrect BIC can cause a delay, a returned payment or extra fees, so compare it with the list on this page.
We gather bank codes using public sources and update our list from time to time. Still, banks merge or retire codes and our data may lag behind. Use this list as a reference: the bank details from the recipient come first. GoldexPay is not a bank and has no link to the banks in this list.
Fraudsters regularly send payment requests carrying changed bank details that look completely genuine. A valid BIC tells you nothing about whether a request is genuine.
United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad and its SWIFT codes
Of all banks we list for Malaysia, United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Berhad is listed with the most codes. Its main office has UOVBMYKLXXX and that code covers most payments.
Practice differs in how many codes they register. If not the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code UOVBMYKLXXX works for transfers to this bank.
When does money sent to Malaysia arrive?
There is no fixed delivery time for payments to Malaysia: some land within a day. Payments made late in the day or just before weekends and holidays usually start a business day later.
If a transfer seems delayed, ask the sender to contact their own bank for a trace. Specialist transfer services often provide tracking online.
Sending money to Malaysia for less
If you transfer money to Malaysia via your bank, the fee you see is only part of what you pay. There is a transfer fee, sometimes fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the margin on the exchange rate.
The real cost is often in the rate, not in the fee. An easy check: put the offered rate against the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.
For a lot of currency pairs, a transfer service turns out to be cheaper than a traditional bank transfer, mainly because of the rate. GoldexPay compares transfer services side by side so you can see what actually arrives in Malaysia for the same amount sent.
SWIFT transfers to Malaysia
Malaysia is not part of the SEPA area, the European zone for uniform euro payments. Payments from abroad normally go over the SWIFT network, and the BIC of the receiving bank is required.
Not every country uses the IBAN; in that case the local account number is used instead. Check with the recipient which details their bank requires for payments from abroad; banks often publish instructions for this. Before it arrives, a transfer may go through correspondent banks.
