How a SWIFT/BIC code from Morocco is built up

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

ABBM Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
MA Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
MC Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Finding a SWIFT code in Morocco

Our directory covers 55 banks and financial institutions in Morocco, with 101 SWIFT/BIC codes in total. You will need a SWIFT/BIC code mostly when making payments across borders and for payments in a foreign currency.

Every bank is listed with its own page with its main code and if there are any, branch codes. Further down we explain how codes from Morocco are built, how to send money to Morocco without overpaying and what to check before you pay.

How reliable is this list?

The safest source for the BIC is the bank details provided by the recipient – an invoice, a statement or a screenshot from online banking. An incorrect BIC may lead to delays, a returned payment or additional charges.

We collect SWIFT/BIC codes using publicly available data and update them regularly. Institutions reorganise, close branches and change codes – a directory can be a step behind. For a payment of any size, check the BIC with the recipient. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and has no link to the banks in this list.

Be wary of payment requests with a new account. A valid BIC says nothing about who owns the account – scammers use the codes of real banks.

Why a transfer to Morocco needs a SWIFT code

Morocco is outside the SEPA area, the European zone for uniform euro payments. International transfers to Morocco normally go over the SWIFT network, and the BIC of the receiving bank is required.

Not all countries use IBAN numbers; in that case the local account number is used instead. The recipient’s bank usually has a list of required details for payments from abroad. On the way to Morocco, a payment can go through correspondent banks that take a fee.

What a sender needs to pay you in Morocco

Someone abroad who wants to pay you needs several details about your account – incomplete details often cause delays. Give them your name as registered with the bank, the IBAN or account number, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address.

The code of your bank is in our list, yet the version on your own statement or in your banking app is leading. It helps to include your bank’s name and city as well, since some payment forms ask for it.

The amount you receive is often less than what was sent. Correspondent banks can take a fee and your own bank may charge for processing, and when currencies differ, a markup on the rate comes on top. For business payments, agree who bears the costs to avoid a shortfall.

Most SWIFT codes in Morocco: Credit du Maroc

Of the 55 banks in Morocco, Credit du Maroc has the most SWIFT codes. Its head office code is CDMAMAMCXXX, which is the code to use when no branch is specified.

Banks differ in whether they register branch codes. If not the recipient asks for a branch, the head office code CDMAMAMCXXX works for transfers to this bank.

When does money sent to Morocco arrive?

A SWIFT payment to Morocco typically needs anywhere from one to several business days, depending on the currency, the route and the banks involved. Payments made after the cut-off time or just before a weekend or public holiday often go out a business day later.

When a payment takes longer than expected, ask the sender to contact the sending bank for a trace. Specialist transfer services usually show a status in their app, which makes it easier to see where the money is.

The structure of a Morocco SWIFT/BIC code

Each SWIFT/BIC code consists of 8 or 11 characters, always in the same order. Characters one to four identify the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and the next two give the location.

Whatever the bank, all Morocco codes have the same fifth and sixth letters. When the country letters do not match Morocco, the code belongs to a bank in another country – worth double-checking.

An 11-character code ends in three characters for a branch. Choose a branch code just when the recipient’s bank asks for it.

What a transfer to Morocco really costs

What you pay for a transfer to Morocco is made up of more than one component, and the fee on your screen is only one of them. There is the transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup.

That exchange rate margin tends to be the biggest cost item. An easy check: set the rate you get next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.

For many currency pairs, a specialist provider is less expensive than a traditional bank transfer. GoldexPay compares what recipients in Morocco receive with different services.
