Bitpanda versus KuCoin: which one leaves you with more
Choosing between Bitpanda and KuCoin is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup are counted. That is the gap we measure here.
On our site, Bitpanda belongs to the broker category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while KuCoin sits in crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you something about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so today’s result is not set in stone.
Switching between Bitpanda and KuCoin
Using two providers side by side is common. It is perfectly normal to keep Bitpanda for one task and KuCoin for another. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.
Before every larger transfer, check the calculator on this page, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Two kinds of service, partly overlapping
These two come from different corners of the market: broker versus crypto exchange. There is some overlap, but not much. We can only compare the conversions both of them offer.
A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. A crypto exchange is built for buying, selling and storing digital assets, with regular money as the way in and out. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.
When crypto is not on your list, the money service is usually the more natural choice. If crypto is the goal, the exchange is the logical place, even if it also handles some currency transfers.
Where the real cost hides
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Bitpanda and KuCoin may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Verdict: KuCoin comes out cheaper
Across 4 of the 4 conversions that both providers offer, KuCoin delivered the better result at live rates. That gives KuCoin the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out Bitpanda. The scenario table above shows where Bitpanda comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
Price is also not the only factor. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Bitpanda. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Our method
Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The numbers decide, not the commission.
How fast the money arrives
Bitpanda lists its quickest option as Instant, while KuCoin lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Bitpanda or KuCoin: which fits your situation?
When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
Is your money safe?
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
