Bitvavo or Revolut
Picking Bitvavo or Revolut is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.
In our comparison, Bitvavo sits in the crypto exchange group and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Revolut belongs to broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. Those two labels say a fair bit about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and how to combine the two. Because the rates are live, today’s result is not set in stone.
Switching between Bitvavo and Revolut
Using two providers side by side is common. It is perfectly normal to keep Bitvavo for one task and Revolut for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
If you switch, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and download your statements for your records.
Our method
Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Speed: Bitvavo vs Revolut
Bitvavo lists its quickest option as Instant, while Revolut lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
A money service and a crypto exchange
This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: crypto exchange and broker. Their offers overlap only in part. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.
A money service focuses on paying, spending and sending in regular currencies. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.
When crypto is not on your list, the money service is usually the more natural choice. If you want to buy or sell crypto, an exchange offers more choice in assets and order types.
The short answer
Across 3 of the 3 scenarios that both providers offer, Bitvavo delivered the better result at live rates. That gives Bitvavo the edge for most typical transfers.
This does not rule out Revolut. The scenario table above shows which conversions Revolut still wins, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.
Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with Revolut, which saves a sign-up. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Where the real cost hides
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Also look beyond the conversion: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.
Bitvavo or Revolut: which fits your situation?
When you travel, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.
Is your money safe?
Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Why the amount can change the winner
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
