eToro or Gemini: the real cost compared

Picking eToro or Gemini comes down to more than the brand name. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. This page puts a number on that.

In our database, eToro sits in the broker group and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Gemini is filed under crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and which one fits which situation. Rates on this page are live, so today’s result is not set in stone.

How we compare eToro and Gemini

The cost of a conversion has two parts: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

The right choice depends on what you do

When you travel, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

To send money to a bank account abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

When buying crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

Two kinds of service, partly overlapping

This is a comparison across categories: broker versus crypto exchange. There is some overlap, but not much. We can only compare the conversions both of them offer.

A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. A crypto exchange is built for buying, selling and storing digital assets, with regular money as the way in and out. Keep this in mind when you read the result.

If you only want to change currency or send money abroad, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. If crypto is the goal, the exchange is the logical place, even if it also handles some currency transfers.

Switching between eToro and Gemini

You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.

Verdict

For 3 out of 3 comparisons we can test on both sides, Gemini left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. If cost is your main concern, start with Gemini.

This does not rule out eToro. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where eToro does better, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Price is also not the only factor. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward eToro. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

What to check on safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.

Speed and convenience

The fastest delivery we have on record for eToro is Instant; for Gemini it is Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
