Finst versus Revolut: what each one really costs
Choosing between Finst and Revolut is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup are added up. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our comparison, Finst sits in the crypto exchange group and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Revolut is filed under broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. This already says a fair bit about where they overlap and where they do not.
Below the calculator we explain how we work out the cost, what each one is good at, and who should pick which. Because the rates are live, the outcome can shift during the day.
Safety checks before you sign up
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
Speed and convenience
Fastest delivery: Instant at Finst and Instant at Revolut. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Convenience counts too: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Finst or Revolut: which fits your situation?
When you travel, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. Nothing here is investment advice.
Small amounts vs large amounts
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
How we calculate the cost
There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The numbers decide, not the commission.
Verdict
For 3 out of 3 conversions that Finst and Revolut both support, Finst left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. If cost is your main concern, start with Finst.
That does not make Revolut the wrong choice. Check the table above to see which conversions Revolut still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.
There is more to it than price. Revolut may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Fees vs exchange-rate margin
“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Finst and Revolut may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Two kinds of service, partly overlapping
This is a comparison across categories: crypto exchange versus broker. They overlap, but only partly. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.
Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. A crypto exchange revolves around digital assets; regular currencies are mostly the on-ramp and off-ramp. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.
When crypto is not on your list, a crypto platform is mostly a detour. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.
Can you use Finst and Revolut together?
You do not have to pick just one. It is perfectly normal to keep Finst for one task and Revolut for another. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.
Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.
If you switch, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and download your statements for your records.
