WorldRemit or Xe: a side-by-side cost check
Choosing between WorldRemit and Xe is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. That is the gap we measure here.
In our comparison, WorldRemit belongs to the money transfer service group and covers Currencies, while Xe sits in money transfer service and handles Currencies. Those two labels say something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Below the calculator you can read our method, what each one is good at and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Which one suits you?
When you travel, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. Nothing here is investment advice.
Two rivals in the same category
WorldRemit and Xe belong to the same category, money transfer service, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. On paper, WorldRemit supports Currencies and Xe supports Currencies. A missing currency is a dealbreaker that no price advantage fixes.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
With crypto platforms, look a little further: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. And on any platform: turn on 2FA and never reuse passwords.
Delivery time and ease of use
Fastest delivery: Same day at WorldRemit and 1–2 business days at Xe. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Convenience counts too: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Our method
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Using both, or switching
Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Our verdict: Xe comes out cheaper
Across 6 of the 6 conversions that both providers offer, Xe delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. That gives Xe the edge for most typical transfers.
That does not make WorldRemit the wrong choice. The scenario table above shows where WorldRemit comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, WorldRemit is simply the cheaper option for you.
There is more to it than price. You may already have a verified account with WorldRemit, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Where the real cost hides
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
So we never compare fees on their own. WorldRemit and Xe may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.
