PayPal vs Xe
Deciding between PayPal and Xe is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are added up. This page puts a number on that.
In our comparison, PayPal belongs to the money transfer service category and covers Currencies, while Xe is filed under money transfer service with support for Currencies. Those two labels say something about where they overlap and where they do not.
Below the calculator we explain how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Speed and convenience
The fastest delivery we have on record for PayPal is Instant; for Xe it is 1–2 business days. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.
Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Verdict: Xe wins on cost
For 7 out of 7 comparisons that both providers offer, Xe delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Xe the edge for most typical transfers.
Still, PayPal is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where PayPal does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, PayPal is simply the cheaper option for you.
Price is also not the only factor. PayPal may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Which one suits you?
For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
Regulation and safety
Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Two rivals in the same category
Both PayPal and Xe sit in the money transfer service category, which makes this a fair, direct comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.
Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. PayPal handles Currencies; Xe handles Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
Can you use PayPal and Xe together?
Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.
For anything above everyday amounts, compare live quotes here first, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It takes a minute and can save real money.
When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and keep a copy of your transaction history.
How the numbers are worked out
Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The numbers decide, not the commission.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Also look beyond the conversion: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
