OFX versus Xe
Choosing between OFX and Xe is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much of your money arrives once every fee and the exchange rate have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.
On our site, OFX belongs to the money transfer service category and handles Currencies, while Xe is filed under money transfer service with support for Currencies. This already says a fair bit about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.
Does the amount matter?
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. Before a big transfer with OFX or Xe, read the current pricing on their site.
How we calculate the cost
Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
We are not owned by any provider. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Who should pick OFX and who Xe?
When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
For transfers to family or bills abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.
How fast the money arrives
The fastest delivery we have on record for OFX is 1–2 business days; for Xe it is 1–2 business days. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Can you use OFX and Xe together?
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
For anything above everyday amounts, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.
When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Verdict: OFX wins on cost
Across 5 of the 5 comparisons that both providers offer, OFX delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with OFX.
Still, Xe is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find where Xe comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Xe may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
Same category, different details
OFX and Xe belong to the same category, money transfer service, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Check the basics: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. OFX covers Currencies, Xe covers Currencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.
After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, together with practical things like limits and support. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
The fee is only half the story
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. OFX and Xe may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.
Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
