Paysend versus Xe: a side-by-side cost check
Choosing between Paysend and Xe is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much of your money arrives once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.
In our comparison, Paysend falls into the money transfer service group and works with Currencies, while Xe is filed under money transfer service and handles Currencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about where they overlap and where they do not.
Further down this page we explain our method, what each one is good at and how to combine the two. Rates on this page are live, so the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.
The fee is only half the story
Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
So we never compare fees on their own. Paysend and Xe may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Why not use both?
Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Speed: Paysend vs Xe
Fastest delivery: Within minutes at Paysend and 1–2 business days at Xe. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
Speed often depends on how you pay. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.
Our method
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
Like for like: Paysend and Xe
Paysend and Xe belong to the same category, money transfer service, so this is a like-for-like comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.
Look at coverage first: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. On paper, Paysend supports Currencies and Xe supports Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, along with practical matters such as the app and customer service. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.
The right choice depends on what you do
For travel spending, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.
For buying digital assets, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.
The short answer
For 6 out of 6 comparisons that both providers offer, Xe delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Xe the edge for most typical transfers.
Still, Paysend is not out of the race. Check the table above to see which conversions Paysend still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.
There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Paysend. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.
Why the amount can change the winner
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
What to check on safety
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.
For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
