Wise vs Xe: a side-by-side cost check

Deciding between Wise and Xe is less obvious than it looks. The useful question is how much of your money arrives once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, Wise belongs to the money transfer service category and handles Currencies, while Xe sits in money transfer service and covers Currencies. This already says a fair bit about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and who should pick which. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.

Can you use Wise and Xe together?

Using two providers side by side is common. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

Before every larger transfer, check the calculator on this page, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. It takes a minute and can save real money.

When you move away from one provider, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and keep a copy of your transaction history.

Who should pick Wise and who Xe?

When you travel, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.

If you want to buy crypto, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.

Like for like: Wise and Xe

Both Wise and Xe sit in the money transfer service category, so they compete for the same customers. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.

Check the basics: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Wise handles Currencies; Xe handles Currencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Wise and Xe may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

How the numbers are worked out

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.

Speed: Wise vs Xe

Fastest delivery: Same day at Wise and 1–2 business days at Xe. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. If the money is not urgent, the slower and cheaper route is often the smart choice.

Convenience counts too: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

Verdict: Wise wins on cost

In 7 of 7 comparisons we can test on both sides, Wise delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Wise the edge for most typical transfers.

That does not make Xe the wrong choice. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where Xe does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.

There is more to it than price. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Xe. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Is your money safe?

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. Providers normally list their licence and the supervising authority on their website.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
