Hong Kong Dollar to Chinese Yuan: what you are looking at

This overview tracks the rate for Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Chinese Yuan (CNY) and sets it next to the prices that banks, money apps and exchanges actually ask. As of October 31, 2026, one HKD is worth 0.848435 CNY, and a single CNY is worth 1.1786 HKD.

The figure at the top is the interbank mid rate. It is the midpoint between what wholesale traders pay for HKD and what they ask for it. It works as a neutral benchmark: no fee or margin is built in, so you rarely get it as a private customer.

What you actually receive depends on two things: the margin a provider adds to that rate and any fixed or percentage fee. Further down we show how those costs are built up, look at what a conversion costs in practice and share simple habits to keep more of your money when you change HKD into CNY.

Where the cost of converting HKD to CNY hides

Nearly every bank and app stay away from the mid-market rate as such. Instead they shift the rate in their own favour and pocket the gap. This is known as the spread. A markup of 2%, for example, means that for every 100 HKD you convert, about 2 HKD worth disappears before the money arrives.

Next to that markup, a lot of services ask for a separate fee. It may be a fixed amount per transfer, a share of what you send or a mix of both. With international bank payments the receiving or intermediary bank sometimes deducts a charge too, and those only show up at the end.

Be wary of services that advertise free transfers. Free usually means the price is built into the exchange rate. The reliable test is how much CNY the recipient ends up with for an identical HKD amount, and that is the figure our table ranks on.

Getting the most CNY for your HKD

Compare the total cost, not the fee alone. A small fee on its own says little because the margin can make up the difference. The fairest figure to compare is how much CNY arrives for your HKD, and that already includes both the markup and the fee.

When you pay by card abroad, you may be asked whether to pay in HKD or in the local currency. The trade name for this is dynamic currency conversion. The rate used is usually poor. Pick the local currency and the conversion follows your card’s own terms.

Timing can also matter. Some providers widen their margin at weekends, when currency markets are closed. For transfers that can wait, an alert tells you when the rate hits a level you are happy with. It takes the guesswork out, though there is no guarantee the rate will get there.

The payment method matters as well. Paying by credit card can trigger extra charges, while a plain bank transfer is normally the low-cost option. Combining several small payments into one larger transfer also cuts the impact of fixed fees.

Where you pay with HKD and CNY

Hong Kong Dollar is the legal tender in Hong Kong SAR China. Chinese Yuan is what people pay with in China. Knowing this helps when you plan a trip, pay an invoice or send money to family.

People convert HKD to CNY for many reasons: paying suppliers, supporting relatives, buying property or simply travelling. Not every situation needs the same solution: a single big transfer benefits most from a sharp rate, while regular small amounts suffer more from flat charges.

The way money is paid out also differs per country. Some recipients expect a bank account number with a local bank code, others an IBAN, and in some places payout to a mobile wallet is the norm. Check which details the provider needs before you start.

Hong Kong Dollar against Chinese Yuan: the last twelve months

Compared with a year ago, the exchange rate has changed by -7.33%. In that period the highest level was 0.916695 CNY per HKD, and the low point came in at 0.848435. The current 0.848435 can be measured against those two levels.

The distance between the high and the low puts the movement into real terms. On a large conversion, the moment of conversion matters in actual money, even when the fee stays the same.

The rate reflects news, economic data and supply and demand on the market. We show the figures as they are and do not make predictions. If timing matters to you, a rate alert is a calmer option than trying to predict the market.

Before you send: security and large amounts

Make sure the provider is licensed. A regulated provider is registered with a supervisor such as the FCA or your national central bank. Licensed payment firms must keep customer money separate from their own, which protects you if something goes wrong.

Double-check the recipient details before you confirm. An international payment is hard to reverse once it is sent. Watch out for pressure, urgency or a last-minute change of account details: confirm by phone using a number you already know.

For large amounts, expect extra checks. Have documents ready that show where the money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. For big amounts it can pay to ask for a better rate. Ask whether you can fix the rate in advance.

Choosing a route to send CNY

With a classic international transfer, the bank sends the payment over the SWIFT network. Along the way one or more intermediary banks may handle it, and each can take a fee. It typically arrives within a few working days, and the exact cost is not always clear in advance.

Specialised transfer services often work differently. They have local accounts on both sides, which means your payment and the payout both happen domestically. The result tends to be quicker and less expensive, with the final CNY amount fixed upfront.

Delivery time depends on several factors: how you pay, the time of day, cut-off times and bank holidays in both countries. The very first payment may be slower while identity checks are done. Upload your documents early if the money has to arrive on a set date.

Sample calculation for 10,000.00 HKD

Consider an amount of 10,000.00 HKD. Converted at the pure mid-market rate (0.848435), you can work out the upper limit of what is possible on the CNY side. No service pays out that exact figure, since the margin and fees are taken out along the way.

Of the 9 providers we compared, Wise delivered the most and paid out 8,443.18 CNY in the end. The difference between that figure and the mid-market amount is the real price of the transfer.

Bear in mind that a different amount can produce a different winner. A flat fee hurts most when the amount is small, while the margin in the rate becomes the bigger cost on larger transfers. Run your own figure through the converter for a ranking that fits your situation.

Why we compare total cost

Our starting point is the current mid-market rate. We then apply each provider’s published fees and exchange rate margin, which gives the amount the recipient receives. In total 9 providers are included, ranked from most to least received.

Rates are refreshed every 30 minutes, with October 31, 2026 as the reference date. Providers confirm their own price at checkout, since markets keep moving, especially when markets are busy.

No bank, app or exchange owns GoldexPay. We may earn a commission through some links, which help fund our work. The order is never affected by them: the provider that delivers the most CNY comes first, whether or not we have a link to it.
