The way a SWIFT/BIC code from Sweden is built up

A SWIFT/BIC code has 8 or 11 characters. Each part has a fixed meaning:

ABRO Bank code
4 letters that identify the bank.
SE Country code
2 letters for the country (ISO 3166).
S1 Location code
2 characters for the city or region of the head office.
XXX Branch code
3 characters for a specific branch. XXX means the head office.

Bank SWIFT codes for Sweden

For Sweden we have 523 SWIFT/BIC codes from 421 financial institutions. You will need such a code mostly when making payments across borders, and especially for payments in foreign currencies.

Every bank is listed with its own page with its main code and, where available, branch codes. The rest of this page covers how the codes work, the cost of transfers and the checks worth doing before a payment.

Recognising a SWIFT code from Sweden

A SWIFT code is 8 or 11 characters long and the parts always come in the same order. The first four letters stand for the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and characters seven and eight mark the location.

In every code from Sweden, letters five and six show the two-letter ISO code of Sweden, which makes these codes easy to recognise. Codes with other letters in that position come from another country, even if the bank name looks familiar.

The optional last three characters stand for a branch or department; XXX is used for the head office. In most cases the head office code is what you need unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

Paying in euros to Sweden

Within the SEPA zone, euro payments to Sweden use common rules. The BIC field is often optional for those payments.

The BIC does matter for payments in other currencies and for transfers from outside SEPA. Instant euro transfers have become increasingly available within SEPA, though not every bank offers them for every account. Provided the payment stays in euros, a SEPA transfer tends to be cheap.

Tracking a payment to Sweden

There is no fixed delivery time for payments to Sweden: many land the same day or the next while others need several business days. Bank holidays in either country can add extra days to the journey.

If the money is delayed, ask the sender to contact the sending bank and ask for the status or the UETR. Save your transfer receipt until the money has arrived; a bank needs it to start a trace.

Bank or transfer service for Sweden?

What you pay for a transfer to Sweden is made up of several parts, and the fee on your screen is only one of them. You pay the transfer fee, possibly charges from intermediary banks along the way and, most importantly, the margin on the exchange rate if the money is converted.

Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate, not in the fee – the bank builds a margin into its rate. An easy check: set the offered rate next to the mid-market rate and look at the difference.

Specialist money transfer services often use a rate near the mid-market rate and lower fees. GoldexPay compares these providers next to each other, showing the amount that reaches the recipient for the same amount sent.

Most SWIFT codes in Sweden: Nasdaq Omx Broker Services Aktiebolag

Of all banks in Sweden, Nasdaq Omx Broker Services Aktiebolag has the largest number of SWIFT codes. The head office uses OMBSSESSXXX – the code most transfers need.

Banks differ in whether they register branch codes, so the count is not a ranking of size. Paying someone at Nasdaq Omx Broker Services Aktiebolag? Go with OMBSSESSXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.

What a sender needs to pay you in Sweden

When you expect money from abroad on an account in Sweden, send the payer everything they need in one go. In practice that means: your full name as your bank knows it, your IBAN or account number, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your postal address.

Look up the bank in the list above and compare the code with your own bank details. Some banks may also want your bank’s address, so keep it at hand.

The amount you receive is often lower than the amount sent. Charges on incoming payments differ from bank to bank. Make clear with the sender who pays which costs.

Sweden and the Swedish Krona

Bank accounts in Sweden are usually held in SEK – the Swedish Krona. Money sent in a different currency will be exchanged into SEK – and the bank that does it picks the rate.

Who does the conversion has an effect on the final amount, since every bank sets its own rate. Often you pay less to send SEK straight away through a transfer service with a good rate. Rates for SEK change during the day, so a quote is usually valid only briefly.

Banks in Sweden starting with :letter

You are looking at a filtered list: just institutions in Sweden with a name starting with :letter. The counts in the introduction still refer to the whole country and not only this selection.

Some banks are listed under their legal name, so the letter can differ from what you expect. The complete list remains available if you cannot find the bank here.

How reliable is this list?

Have the recipient copy their bank details straight from their online banking. A wrong code can cause a delay, a returned payment or additional charges – compare it with the code in our list.

This list draws on public sources. Institutions merge, change names and retire codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. Use our data as a reference. We are an independent comparison service.

Watch out for invoices containing a new account, especially when they come by email. Always confirm a change of bank details through a separate channel on a number you know.
