Bitpanda versus OKX: which one leaves you with more

Deciding between Bitpanda and OKX is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much of your money arrives once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is exactly what this page measures.

In our database, Bitpanda belongs to the broker category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals, while OKX belongs to crypto exchange and covers Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. This already says something about which jobs each one is built for.

Under the calculator and the scenario table you can read our method, what each one is good at, and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.

Why the amount can change the winner

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. Before a big transfer with Bitpanda or OKX, read the current pricing on their site.

A money service and a crypto exchange

This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: broker versus crypto exchange. Their offers overlap only in part. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.

Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. A crypto exchange revolves around digital assets; regular currencies are mostly the on-ramp and off-ramp. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.

When crypto is not on your list, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.

Safety checks before you sign up

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.

Crypto exchanges deserve extra scrutiny: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Verdict

For 4 out of 4 comparisons that Bitpanda and OKX both support, OKX delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives OKX the edge for most typical transfers.

That does not make Bitpanda the wrong choice. The scenario table above shows the routes where Bitpanda does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Bitpanda. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

How we calculate the cost

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

The fee is only half the story

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

Which one suits you?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.

If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Why not use both?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, since rates move and the cheaper side can flip. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.

Delivery time and ease of use

Bitpanda lists its quickest option as Instant, while OKX lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
