eToro versus HTX
Deciding between eToro and HTX is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.
On our site, eToro falls into the broker category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while HTX belongs to crypto exchange with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we walk through our method, where each provider tends to do well and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Switching between eToro and HTX
Using two providers side by side is common. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.
Before every larger transfer, check the calculator on this page, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It takes a minute and can save real money.
Before you close an account, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
How we calculate the cost
There are two parts to the price of any conversion: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. Our yardstick is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what the market bids and asks. Fee plus margin gives the real cost.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
GoldexPay is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. If a provider we earn nothing from is cheaper, it still comes out on top.
eToro or HTX: which fits your situation?
When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.
If you send money abroad regularly, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
How fast the money arrives
The fastest delivery we have on record for eToro is Instant; for HTX it is Instant. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Convenience counts too: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.
Two kinds of service, partly overlapping
This is a comparison across categories: broker and crypto exchange. There is some overlap, but not much. We can only compare the conversions both of them offer.
A money service focuses on paying, spending and sending in regular currencies. A crypto exchange is built for buying, selling and storing digital assets, with regular money as the way in and out. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.
When crypto is not on your list, the money service is usually the more natural choice. If crypto is the goal, the exchange is the logical place, even if it also handles some currency transfers.
Verdict
In 3 of 3 conversions that eToro and HTX both support, HTX left you with more money at live rates. On price alone, that makes HTX the default pick.
That does not make eToro the wrong choice. Check the table above to see which conversions eToro still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, eToro is simply the cheaper option for you.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward eToro. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Why “zero fee” is not always cheap
A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. eToro and HTX may structure their pricing differently, one with a visible fee and a tight rate, the other with no fee and a wider spread. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Also look beyond the conversion: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.
Why the amount can change the winner
The size of the amount can change the winner. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With eToro or HTX, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.
Regulation and safety
Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
