Gate vs Revolut: what each one really costs
Choosing between Gate and Revolut is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much of your money arrives once both the visible fee and the hidden margin are added up. This page puts a number on that.
In our comparison, Gate sits in the crypto exchange category and works with Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Revolut is filed under broker and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. Those two labels say a fair bit about where they overlap and where they do not.
Further down this page we explain our method, what each one is good at and how to combine the two. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Where the real cost hides
“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.
So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.
Safety checks before you sign up
Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.
An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.
For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
Two kinds of service, partly overlapping
This comparison puts two different kinds of services side by side: crypto exchange and broker. Their offers overlap only in part. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.
Money apps are designed around currencies, cards and transfers to bank accounts. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. That difference matters more than a few cents on one conversion.
For everyday currency needs, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. If crypto is the goal, the exchange is the logical place, even if it also handles some currency transfers.
Small amounts vs large amounts
Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
Delivery time and ease of use
Fastest delivery: Instant at Gate and Instant at Revolut. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.
Speed often depends on how you pay. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Gate or Revolut: which fits your situation?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
If you send money abroad regularly, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.
How the numbers are worked out
The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.
This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The numbers decide, not the commission.
Switching between Gate and Revolut
Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.
When you move away from one provider, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and keep a copy of your transaction history.
Which one is cheaper?
Across 4 of the 4 scenarios we can test on both sides, Gate left you with more money once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes Gate the default pick.
Still, Revolut is not out of the race. The scenario table above shows where Revolut comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, Revolut is simply the cheaper option for you.
Price is also not the only factor. Revolut may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.
