Instarem versus Wise: a side-by-side cost check
Choosing between Instarem and Wise is less obvious than it looks. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. This page puts a number on that.
In our comparison, Instarem belongs to the money transfer service group and handles Currencies, while Wise sits in money transfer service with support for Currencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about where they overlap and where they do not.
Under the calculator and the scenario table we explain how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and which one fits which situation. Since we work with live rates, the outcome can shift during the day.
Two rivals in the same category
Instarem and Wise are both in our money transfer service category, so they compete for the same customers. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.
Look at coverage first: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. Instarem handles Currencies; Wise handles Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.
Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.
Can you use Instarem and Wise together?
You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.
For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. It is a quick check that pays off.
When you move away from one provider, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
How the numbers are worked out
Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.
We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.
We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.
The fee is only half the story
“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.
So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. The amount received is the honest benchmark.
Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.
Instarem or Wise: which fits your situation?
If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.
To send money to a bank account abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.
If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. Nothing here is investment advice.
Verdict
For 7 out of 7 conversions that Instarem and Wise both support, Wise delivered the better result once fees and exchange rate were counted. That gives Wise the edge for most typical transfers.
Still, Instarem is not out of the race. Check the table above to see where Instarem comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.
Cost is one thing, not everything. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward Instarem. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
Is your money safe?
Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.
With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.
With crypto platforms, look a little further: ask about registration, custody and withdrawal options. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
How fast the money arrives
Fastest delivery: 1–2 business days at Instarem and Same day at Wise. These are best cases, not guarantees. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.
How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.
Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: how easy the app is, whether you can track a transfer and how fast support responds. Try the app before you move a large amount.
Does the amount matter?
The size of the amount can change the winner. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.
For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
