Instarem vs PayPal

Picking Instarem or PayPal is rarely about the logo. The useful question is how much you actually keep once both the visible fee and the hidden margin have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

In our database, Instarem belongs to the money transfer service group and handles Currencies, while PayPal belongs to money transfer service and covers Currencies. Those two labels say a fair bit about when one can stand in for the other.

Below the calculator we explain our method, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number, and who should pick which. Because the rates are live, today’s result is not set in stone.

The fee is only half the story

Plenty of services advertise a zero fee. A provider can still earn its money on the rate. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

For this reason our comparison combines the fee and the rate margin into one number. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. Only the amount that arrives tells you who is really cheaper.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: card payment fees, surcharges for weekends or rare currencies, and costs on the receiving side. Some of these sit outside what we can measure, so check the provider’s fee page before a big transfer.

Two rivals in the same category

Instarem and PayPal belong to the same category, money transfer service, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Check the basics: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. On paper, Instarem supports Currencies and PayPal supports Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Which one suits you?

For travel spending, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.

Safety checks before you sign up

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.

How fast the money arrives

Instarem lists its quickest option as 1–2 business days, while PayPal lists Instant. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Can you use Instarem and PayPal together?

Using two providers side by side is common. It is perfectly normal to keep Instarem for one task and PayPal for another. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

Before every larger transfer, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

If you switch, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and keep a copy of your transaction history.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The size of the amount can change the winner. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.

Our method

Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

This comparison is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Verdict

In 7 of 7 comparisons that Instarem and PayPal both support, Instarem came out cheaper after fees and rate margin. That gives Instarem the edge for most typical transfers.

Still, PayPal is not out of the race. Scroll back to the table to find the routes where PayPal does better. If your currency pair and amount are among them, the overall tally matters a lot less.

Price is also not the only factor. PayPal may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.
