OFX or Wise: the real cost compared

Deciding between OFX and Wise comes down to more than the brand name. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. That is the gap we measure here.

In our comparison, OFX falls into the money transfer service category and works with Currencies, while Wise sits in money transfer service and covers Currencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Below the calculator we walk through our method, where each provider tends to do well and how to combine the two. Rates on this page are live, so the outcome can shift during the day.

Is your money safe?

Cheap is only good if your money is in safe hands. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be held apart from the firm’s own money. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: check their registration, how they store customer assets and whether withdrawals to your own wallet are possible. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Delivery time and ease of use

Fastest delivery: 1–2 business days at OFX and Same day at Wise. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. A card payment or instant bank transfer is usually quicker than a regular bank transfer, but it can cost more. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Which app feels easier is a matter of taste.

The short answer

For 5 out of 5 comparisons that OFX and Wise both support, Wise delivered the better result at live rates. On price alone, that makes Wise the default pick.

This does not rule out OFX. Scroll back to the table to find which conversions OFX still wins. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

Price is also not the only factor. OFX may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. On a modest amount, a small price gap is often worth less than that convenience.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. On a large amount, a small margin can add up to more than a fixed fee would.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Our method

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. We update rates every 30 minutes and take fees from each provider’s public price list. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

OFX or Wise: which fits your situation?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. A multi-currency account with a card is usually the most practical tool.

To send money to a bank account abroad, the total cost per transfer and the delivery time are what count. With bigger sums, ask about limits and extra checks before you start.

When buying crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. Nothing here is investment advice.

Why not use both?

You do not have to pick just one. It is perfectly normal to keep OFX for one task and Wise for another. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, as the result depends on the moment and the sum. That small habit can save more than any loyalty bonus.

Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.

Like for like: OFX and Wise

Both OFX and Wise sit in the money transfer service category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Look at coverage first: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. OFX covers Currencies, Wise covers Currencies. If one of them does not cover your currency, the choice is made for you.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Because they are so similar, trying the other one later costs little.

Small amounts vs large amounts

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, and your own price may then be better than the one shown. For any large transfer, confirm the final quote in the app before you approve it.
