Instarem or Paysend: what each one really costs

Choosing between Instarem and Paysend is less obvious than it looks. What matters is how much of your money arrives once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.

On our site, Instarem sits in the money transfer service category and handles Currencies, while Paysend is filed under money transfer service with support for Currencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator we explain our method, what each one is good at, and who should pick which. Because the rates are live, the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Why not use both?

Many people do not use one provider for everything. It is perfectly normal to keep Instarem for one task and Paysend for another. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It is a quick check that pays off.

Before you close an account, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and download your statements for your records.

Instarem or Paysend: which fits your situation?

For travel spending, compare what a card payment in a foreign currency costs at each. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, compare the received amount for your usual sum. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

Fees vs exchange-rate margin

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. A margin of a fraction of a percent sounds small, but it grows with every amount you convert.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Watch for extra costs outside the conversion itself: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

How we calculate the cost

Every provider earns money in two ways: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. The gap is the margin, and we add it to the fee.

We run this for several sample amounts, from small to large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

This comparison is independent. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Which one is cheaper?: Instarem is cheaper more often

For 6 out of 6 scenarios that both providers offer, Instarem came out cheaper after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with Instarem.

That does not make Paysend the wrong choice. Check the table above to see where Paysend comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. Paysend may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

How fast the money arrives

Instarem lists its quickest option as 1–2 business days, while Paysend lists Within minutes. These are best cases, not guarantees. Bank holidays, verification checks and the receiving bank can all add time.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

Same category, different details

Instarem and Paysend are both in our money transfer service category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. That makes the differences smaller, but they still matter.

Look at coverage first: the list of supported currencies or coins and where you can use them. Instarem covers Currencies, Paysend covers Currencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, along with practical matters such as the app and customer service. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Why the amount can change the winner

The cheapest choice for a small amount is not always the cheapest for a large one. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. Our scenario table reflects this by testing several amounts.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. With Instarem or Paysend, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

What to check on safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. A legitimate provider is licensed or registered with a financial regulator. You can usually find the licence details in the footer or legal section of the provider’s website.

For money services, the key word is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Note that safeguarding differs from a bank deposit guarantee.

With crypto platforms, look a little further: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. In all cases, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from day one.
