PayPal or Wise

Deciding between PayPal and Wise is rarely about the logo. The real question is how much ends up on the other side once the fee and the rate markup have been taken into account. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, PayPal belongs to the money transfer service group and handles Currencies, while Wise sits in money transfer service with support for Currencies. That alone tells you quite a lot about when one can stand in for the other.

Further down this page you can read our method, what each one is good at and who should pick which. Since we work with live rates, today’s result is not set in stone.

Small amounts vs large amounts

The size of the amount can change the winner. A fixed fee weighs heavily on a small transfer but barely registers on a large one. So look at the row closest to the amount you plan to convert.

If you move larger sums regularly, check whether tiered pricing applies, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. With PayPal or Wise, check the current terms before you move a significant sum.

Two rivals in the same category

Both PayPal and Wise sit in the money transfer service category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. They solve the same problem, so price, speed and coverage decide.

Start with coverage: which currencies or assets each one supports, and which countries you can send to or from. On paper, PayPal supports Currencies and Wise supports Currencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

After that, it comes down to price on your specific route, plus limits, verification and the quality of the app. Since both play in the same league, switching later is usually easy.

Is your money safe?

Price matters, but so does knowing your money is handled properly. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

An important question is safeguarding: customer funds should be kept separate from the company’s own money, so they are protected if the company runs into trouble. That is a different kind of protection from a bank deposit guarantee scheme.

With crypto platforms, look a little further: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Verdict

Across 7 of the 7 scenarios we can test on both sides, Wise delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. That gives Wise the edge for most typical transfers.

That does not make PayPal the wrong choice. Check the table above to see where PayPal comes out ahead. If your currency pair and amount are among them, that single row counts more than the total score.

Price is also not the only factor. Speed, limits and the way you pay in can tip the balance toward PayPal. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

The fee is only half the story

A low or zero fee looks attractive, but it says little about the total cost. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

Delivery time and ease of use

The fastest delivery we have on record for PayPal is Instant; for Wise it is Same day. That is the quickest route, not the usual one for every transfer. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

How you fund a transfer makes a big difference. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Then there is everyday use: clear status updates and an app you like save time and stress. Try the app before you move a large amount.

The right choice depends on what you do

When you travel, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Whichever of the two offers a usable card for your destination has a head start.

If you send money abroad regularly, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. Large one-off sums deserve a separate check: limits, extra verification and the margin all weigh more.

If you want to buy crypto, only a provider that handles crypto will do, and spreads and withdrawal fees matter most. Business users often need other features, such as multiple users and bulk payments. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

How the numbers are worked out

There are two parts to the price of any conversion: the fee you see and the markup on the rate that you often do not. We compare the rate each provider gives you with the live mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale market. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, since a fixed fee hurts more on small sums. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Special offers or paid plans can change the price you actually pay.

GoldexPay is independent. Affiliate links help pay for the site, but the ranking is based on cost alone. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Using both, or switching

You do not have to pick just one. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Opening an account is usually free, though identity verification can take a while.

Each time you plan a bigger conversion, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.

If you switch, make sure no balance or scheduled transfer is left behind and keep a copy of your transaction history.
