Instarem vs OFX: the real cost compared

Choosing between Instarem and OFX comes down to more than the brand name. What matters is how much you actually keep once the fee and the rate markup are added up. This page puts a number on that.

On our site, Instarem sits in the money transfer service category and works with Currencies, while OFX belongs to money transfer service and handles Currencies. Those two labels say quite a lot about which jobs each one is built for.

Below the calculator you can read how we work out the cost, what each one is good at, and which one fits which situation. Because the rates are live, the outcome can shift during the day.

Why the amount can change the winner

Who comes out ahead can flip as the amount grows. On small sums the fixed part of the price dominates, on large sums the percentage does. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

Some providers lower their percentage above certain thresholds, something our standard scenarios do not always capture. Before a big transfer with Instarem or OFX, read the current pricing on their site.

Regulation and safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Look for a licence or registration with a financial regulator in your country or region. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

With e-money and transfer services, ask about safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.

Verdict: Instarem is cheaper more often

For 5 out of 5 conversions that Instarem and OFX both support, Instarem came out cheaper once fees and exchange rate were counted. On price alone, that makes Instarem the default pick.

This does not rule out OFX. The scenario table above shows the routes where OFX does better, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.

Cost is one thing, not everything. You may already have a verified account with OFX, which saves a sign-up. For small sums, those practical points can outweigh the price difference.

Speed: Instarem vs OFX

The fastest delivery we have on record for Instarem is 1–2 business days; for OFX it is 1–2 business days. Treat these as the best case rather than a promise. A first transfer often takes longer because of identity checks.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Paying by card tends to be faster, and sometimes more expensive, than a standard bank transfer. When there is no rush, a slower option can save you money.

Then there is everyday use: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. Try the app before you move a large amount.

Two rivals in the same category

Both Instarem and OFX sit in the money transfer service category, so this is a like-for-like comparison. When two services do the same job, the details decide.

Check the basics: supported currencies, countries and payment methods. Instarem covers Currencies, OFX covers Currencies. A small gap in coverage can matter more than a small price difference.

Beyond coverage, the cheapest option on your own route wins, together with practical things like limits and support. If one disappoints, the other is an easy alternative.

Who should pick Instarem and who OFX?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, look at card fees, cash withdrawal limits and weekend surcharges, not just the transfer price. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

If you send money abroad regularly, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

For buying digital assets, check that crypto is supported at all, then compare spreads and withdrawal fees. Businesses should look at business accounts and batch payments, which not every provider offers. This page compares cost, not suitability as an investment.

How the numbers are worked out

The cost of a conversion has two parts: a visible fee and a margin hidden in the exchange rate. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

Each conversion is checked with several sample amounts because fixed fees and percentage fees behave differently. Exchange rates are refreshed every 30 minutes; fees are taken from the published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. We may earn a commission through some links; that never affects which provider comes out cheaper. The numbers decide, not the commission.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. Often the cost simply moves into the exchange rate, where it is harder to spot. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

That is why we always look at the total: fee plus margin. Two providers can arrive at a similar price by very different routes. The amount received is the honest benchmark.

Other costs can matter too: weekend surcharges, card fees, charges by the receiving bank or withdrawal fees on crypto. We include what is published, but it pays to double-check before a large transaction.

Switching between Instarem and OFX

You do not have to pick just one. Plenty of users keep an account with both and choose per transfer. Signing up rarely costs anything, but verification is not always instant.

For anything above everyday amounts, run the amount through the calculator, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.

Before you close an account, empty the balance, cancel any recurring payments and save your statements, as you may need them later for your tax return.
