KuCoin vs Revolut: the real cost compared

Picking KuCoin or Revolut comes down to more than the brand name. The useful question is how much you actually keep once every fee and the exchange rate are counted. That is exactly what this page measures.

In our comparison, KuCoin falls into the crypto exchange category and handles Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, while Revolut is filed under broker with support for Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, Precious metals. This already says something about where they overlap and where they do not.

Further down this page we walk through how we work out the cost, the trade-offs that do not show up in a single number and who should pick which. Rates on this page are live, so the numbers may differ slightly from yesterday.

Using both, or switching

Many people do not use one provider for everything. A second account gives you a backup and an easy price check. Expect to verify your identity with each provider separately.

Before every larger transfer, compare live quotes here first, because the cheapest option can change with the rate and the amount. It takes a minute and can save real money.

If you switch, withdraw or spend your remaining balance first and download your statements for your records.

Who should pick KuCoin and who Revolut?

If you mainly spend abroad on holiday, focus on card payments and cash withdrawals rather than bank transfers. Holding a balance in the local currency avoids converting at every purchase.

For transfers to family or bills abroad, look at the amount received and how fast it arrives. For large amounts, such as a house deposit or tuition, even a small margin difference adds up, and limits and verification matter as well.

If you want to buy crypto, you need a platform that actually supports crypto, and you should compare spreads and withdrawal costs. For business payments, check whether a business account is available and what it costs. We compare costs only; this is not investment advice.

Why “zero fee” is not always cheap

“No fees” is one of the most common claims in money transfer, and one of the most misleading. If the exchange rate you get is worse than the mid-market rate, you pay through the rate instead. The bigger the amount, the more that margin hurts.

So we never compare fees on their own. One provider may charge a clear fee with a tight rate, another may skip the fee and widen the rate. What counts is what lands in the account at the end.

Other costs can matter too: withdrawal and network fees, card costs and fees at intermediary banks. Not all of these show up in our scenarios, so read the fee page before you send a large amount.

Why the amount can change the winner

The size of the amount can change the winner. Fixed fees hit small transfers hardest; percentage margins hit large ones hardest. That is why the scenario table shows several amounts, not just one.

For large amounts, it can pay to ask about volume pricing, which is not always visible in our sample amounts. Before a big transfer with KuCoin or Revolut, read the current pricing on their site.

Our verdict

For 4 out of 4 conversions that KuCoin and Revolut both support, KuCoin delivered the better result after fees and rate margin. If cost is your main concern, start with KuCoin.

That does not make Revolut the wrong choice. Check the table above to see where Revolut comes out ahead, and if your own transfer matches one of those rows, that single row counts more than the total score.

There is more to it than price. Revolut may support a payment method, a currency or a delivery option you need. A few cents on a small transfer rarely beat that kind of convenience.

How we calculate the cost

Every provider earns money in two ways: a fee and an exchange-rate margin. As a benchmark we use the live mid-market rate, the rate banks and large traders use among themselves. That gap is the margin, which we add to the fee to get the total cost.

We test a range of sample amounts, small, medium and large, so the effect of fixed fees and percentages becomes visible. Rates refresh every 30 minutes and fees come from the providers’ published fee schedules. Promotions, account tiers and personal discounts are not always included, so your own offer may differ.

We are not owned by any provider. Some links on the site are affiliate links, but they never change the order or the outcome. The cheaper option is shown as cheaper, full stop.

Speed: KuCoin vs Revolut

KuCoin lists its quickest option as Instant, while Revolut lists Instant. These are best cases, not guarantees. Weekends, first-time checks and the recipient’s bank can slow things down.

The payment method matters as much as the provider. Faster funding options can come with a higher fee, so check the total in the calculator. Only pay for speed when you actually need it.

Beyond raw speed, think about convenience: a clear app, transfer tracking and quick support make a difference when something goes wrong. A small test transfer tells you more than any review.

A money service and a crypto exchange

This is a comparison across categories: crypto exchange and broker. There is some overlap, but not much. The scenario table only shows the conversions both support, which can be a small slice of what each one does.

A money service is built for sending and spending currencies, often to bank accounts abroad. An exchange is first of all a place to trade crypto, with euros or dollars mainly used to get in and out. So the cheaper side in the table is only part of the picture.

For everyday currency needs, the service built for transfers tends to fit better. For crypto, look at the exchange first and treat its currency features as a bonus.

Regulation and safety

Before you look at cost, check who is looking after your money. Regulated financial services are licensed or registered with a supervisor in the countries where they operate. The supervisor’s public register lets you check this yourself.

An important question is safeguarding: your balance should be ring-fenced from the business’s own accounts. Safeguarding is not the same as a deposit guarantee, so a transfer app is no replacement for a savings account.

For crypto exchanges the questions are similar, but not the same: registration with a regulator, how customer assets are stored and whether you can withdraw to your own wallet. Whichever you choose, switch on two-factor authentication and use a unique password.
