Russia: banks and their SWIFT/BIC codes

On this page you find codes for 785 banks in Russia – 1646 codes altogether. A BIC shows every bank in the chain exactly which bank should receive an international payment.

Every bank has its own page with its main code and, where available, codes for branches and departments. Below the list you can read how a code from Russia is put together, how to send money to Russia without overpaying and how to check a code before you pay.

How long does a transfer to Russia take?

There is no single answer for payments to Russia: some arrive the same day or the next, others take several business days. Public holidays in either country can add a day or more.

Many banks use SWIFT gpi for faster and traceable payments. Every gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR that banks can use to see where the money is. Keep your transfer receipt until the money has arrived – you will need it if something goes wrong.

Paying a bank in Russia from abroad

Since Russia does not belong to SEPA, a transfer from abroad is usually sent as a SWIFT payment. That means you always need the SWIFT/BIC code of the receiving bank, together with the account number or IBAN.

Not every country uses IBAN numbers; in that case the local account number is used instead. Ask the recipient exactly which details their bank needs for incoming international payments; banks often publish instructions for this. On the way to Russia, a transfer may pass through intermediary banks.

The cheapest way to send money to Russia

When you send money to Russia with a regular bank, the stated fee is rarely all of the cost. On top of the fee, correspondent banks may take a cut, and when the money is converted the bank usually applies a rate below the real market rate.

The real cost is often in the rate, rather than in the fee: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. An easy check: put the rate you get against the mid-market rate and look at the difference.

Money transfer services often offer rates closer to the mid-market rate. Before you send money to Russia, it is worth comparing the total cost via GoldexPay instead of going straight to your bank.

How SWIFT codes from Russia are built

Every SWIFT/BIC code has eight or eleven characters. The first four letters stand for the bank, characters five and six are the country code and the next two mark the location.

Whatever the bank, every code from Russia share the same fifth and sixth letters, namely the ISO code of Russia. If those two letters do not match Russia, you are looking at a bank in another country.

The optional last three characters identify a specific branch; XXX means the head office. For most transfers the head office code is fine unless the recipient asks for a specific branch.

Receiving money in Russia from abroad

If you expect a payment from another country on an account in Russia, send the payer everything they need in one go. Give them the account holder’s name, your account number or IBAN, your bank’s SWIFT code and your address.

Find the bank in the list above to check its code, but take the code from your own bank details when in doubt. You can include your bank’s name and city because some forms have separate fields for it.

Do not be surprised if the amount credited is smaller than what the sender paid. Fees for incoming transfers vary per bank – your bank’s price list tells you what applies. On invoices, agree how the fees are split.

Verifying a SWIFT code from Russia

The best place to find the correct BIC is paperwork issued by the bank. If the code you have differs from the code listed here, do not guess: check with the recipient or the bank.

Our SWIFT/BIC directory is compiled from public sources and is updated regularly. Banks reorganise, change names and retire codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. For any payment of any size, check the code with the recipient’s bank. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site and is not affiliated with the banks listed.

Scammers often send fake invoices with new bank details that look completely genuine. Before paying, confirm changed details by phone.

The largest SWIFT network in Russia: JSC Rosselkhozbank

In our directory, JSC Rosselkhozbank holds the largest number of SWIFT/BIC codes in Russia. Its head office code is RUAGRUMMXXX – the code most transfers need.

Many codes often means separate codes for branches, departments or services – it says nothing about the size of the bank as such. Making a payment to JSC Rosselkhozbank? Use RUAGRUMMXXX unless the recipient gives you a branch code.
