Bank or transfer service for Russia?
An international bank payment to Russia can cost rather more than the fee suggests. There is the transfer fee, possibly fees from correspondent banks along the way and, above all, the exchange rate markup if the money is converted.
Most of the cost usually sits in the exchange rate: banks convert at a rate with a margin built in. An easy check: set the offered rate next to the mid-market rate and work out the difference on your amount.
Specialist money transfer services frequently offer a rate near the mid-market rate and lower fees. On GoldexPay we compare the amount that arrives in Russia with different services, so you can pick the cheapest route.
What the letters in a Russia BIC mean
Bank identifier codes use one international format: eight characters plus an optional three-character extension. The first four letters identify the bank, the fifth and sixth characters are the country code and characters seven and eight give the location.
In every code from Russia, characters five and six show the two-letter ISO code of Russia. When those two letters do not match Russia, the code belongs to a bank somewhere else – worth double-checking.
If the last three are XXX, it means the main office, and the 8-character version leads to the same place. For most transfers the head office code is fine, unless the recipient gives you a branch code.
The largest SWIFT network in Russia: JSC Rosselkhozbank
In our data, JSC Rosselkhozbank has the most SWIFT/BIC codes of all banks in Russia. Its head office code is RUAGRUMMXXX – the code most transfers need.
Banks differ in whether they register branch codes. Paying someone at JSC Rosselkhozbank? Go with RUAGRUMMXXX unless a specific branch code is requested.
How long does a transfer to Russia take?
There is no single delivery time for transfers to Russia: some arrive within a day. Payments made after the cut-off time or just before a weekend or public holiday often go out the next business day.
Many banks are connected to SWIFT gpi. Every gpi transfer carries a unique reference, the UETR, which the sending bank can use to trace it. Specialist transfer services often provide tracking in their app, which makes it easier to see where the money is.
Incoming international payments in Russia
When you expect a payment from another country in Russia, give the sender a complete set of details. That means: your name exactly as it appears on the account, your account number or IBAN, the BIC of your bank and sometimes your address.
Find your bank in the list above and compare the code with your own bank details. It helps to include the name and city of your bank as well.
Expect that the incoming amount is smaller than the amount on the sender’s receipt. Correspondent banks can take a fee, your bank may charge for incoming payments, and if the money is converted, a markup on the rate comes on top. For business payments, agree how the fees are split to avoid a shortfall.
Verifying a SWIFT code from Russia
The most reliable source for the BIC is the bank details provided by the recipient. When the code you were given differs from the code listed here, stop and ask – contact the recipient or their bank.
This list is compiled from publicly available sources. Banks merge, change names and change codes, and no directory catches every change immediately. Treat our data as a reference rather than the last word; the recipient’s bank details are leading. GoldexPay is an independent comparison site.
Scammers often use fake invoices carrying changed bank details. A real SWIFT code tells you nothing about whether a request is genuine – scammers use the codes of real banks.

Paying a bank in Russia from abroad
For Russia you almost always need the BIC, because the country is outside the SEPA area. Without it, most banks will not process the payment at all.
Depending on the country, accounts are identified by a domestic account number instead of an IBAN, sometimes with an extra bank or branch code. The recipient’s bank often provides instructions for payments from abroad. Before it arrives, a payment may go through intermediary banks that charge for their part.
